Still in the game

Prepswimmom, You have a great spirit and remind me a lot of my own mother-she's passionate and slightly crazy...in a good way.

I have been reading this thread and definitely felt the ups and downs with all of you.

I posted once before and mentioned that I have an appointment to USNA, but I was undecided. The thing I wanted to mention is that I am also a recruited athlete. I also have 2290 sat's, top 3% rank, other ec's including academic awards, etc...It wasn't that I consciously choose to exploit my athletic participation, it's just always been a part of who I am. Your son sounds like a gifted athlete. I can't understand why he choose not to be part of the great Naval athletic tradition. It almost seems like he deliberately opted to not be recruited on principal. Please forgive me if I am wrong-that is just the impression I get.

I did all I could to present my best possible self to this process and that included my sports background. I won't apologize for that.

I wish you and your son all the best-he sounds great.

Thank you....I think. As I said, DS chose all of his schools for what they offered academically not ones he could swim at. He would have tried for a walk on spot if he got in. I have always had the belief that we as a country put way too much emphasis on sports both at the collegiate level and professional level. Pro athletes are paid way too much money and college athletes, some not all, (so no screaming at me) get a pass so big schools can have great football or basketball teams. I have raised my kids to be athletic, be athletes, but always academics and education come first. They have heard me rail about multi million dollar contracts and the absurdity of them or how college sports are treated like the be all and end all. This is just my opinion and I know I am in the minority. So remain calm everyone - this is just how I am. Not bitter, no sour grapes, not worn out. This was my opinion long before DS was even old enough to go to school.

Hey Gang.....Bob delivered not one, but two $40.00 tux coupons for Men's Warehouse. I will mail them to anyone who needs one. Just let me know. DS can wear mine now. (Thats a big gulp admission.)

That said, here's a tip. Go to your local men's store and buy a black suit. Wear a white button up shirt and purchase a bow tie or borrow one. Your dad's black dress shoes will work fine. You'll get the same effect, spend about the same, and then you'll have a suit for use at graduation or college next year. Ask the store owner for a discount. He will appreciate the business and the ingenuity. (One of my best friends owns a clothing store and does this for young people and grooms getting married.)

Otherwise, hit me up, I've got coupons. WARNING....Bob will be the one to pick up your envelope from me. I will not send it in a TWE.

If any of you live in MA there is a great store in Cambridge that sells used tuxes (I believe originally started for the Harvard boys) for 90.00ish. We bought one for DS because it was cheaper that renting for all the times he needed one.

We did that a couple times for DS. He has had a tux since sometime in middle school and got a fair amount of wear out of both. We paid about the same amount. Mom says it's time for a new one because his shoulders and biceps have outgrown the old one... but I can't think of an occasion where he would use it for at least two or three years. For now dress blues are sufficient.

Waiting for plan B's campus day tour to begin. Beautiful campus, nice people. Quiet on a Saturday morning at the crack of dawn!

Good luck to all of us today! Let the envelopes be kind!

It's a new Saturday , may it bring many BFE to those still waiting. My son is dealing very well with his TWE . He is leaning towards Norwich ,hoping it helps him get ready for the life of a plebe at the NA. The $ 80,000. Merit Scholarship they gave him isn't hurting , plus he can play hoops for them . He will also be on the path to his dream there should he not get that BFE next year.
I am praying this week brings peace to us all who must start this journey all over again in just a few short days.

I don't think so my son attends a private school where they have classes on Saturday . Had it been today we would have , but they are just getting off a 3 week Spring break . Classes start back up Tuesday. I am trying to encourage him to visit so maybe he will change his mind.

Well PM me if you end up going.

I will Pm if he does change his mind . He has a Lacrosse game that day too , but I think it's important for him to visit all is acceptance schools so he can make an informed decision.

I agree. We are visiting his two top choices to make a decision

Well, another day of mail come and gone. Still nothing. Good luck to the rest who are still on this island with me. Go Navy!

Prepswimmom just want to let you know that I agree with every single word you said on this forum. I never left this forum, like promised and in my heart I support everyone who is still waiting or moving on with Plan B. BTW my DS also a swimmer, but applied to all schools solely based on academics.

I wonder if the Monday snow day (east coast) affected this week's board activity. Maybe they're a day or so behind this week.

Still in the game. Rooting for all still in play, especially you, MiddyB. Your latest post was very moving

Thank you dell. I have not left and am still rooting for my pals still in it. DS's
view was I am going to college to learn for my future. And if he could swim as a walk on - great. He contacted the coaches after he was
accepted. And it is working out for him. A few coaches contacted him before senior year but he wasn't interested in the schools so he never pursued them. I am very proud of him for staying true to himself.
