I thought support was the purpose of SAF. Lol. Best wishes to all of those still waiting or pursuing plan B/A2 after a TWE! :)

On March 24th my DS got the TWE. As you would assume he was heart broken; however, he had the A2 plan.

I refer to "A2" because I don't like calling NROTC a "B" plan as it gets you to the same goal of becoming an officer. The Academy, NROTC, OCS are really interchangeable, it's just depends on the road the candidate wants to take.

On Thursday we flew to his A2 school. The day was great... There was a lot of action on campus and we spent the first day doing his thing. And yes there was no way we could leave without spending $120.00 on a sweatshirt, "T" shirt and a bumper sticker. I did not like that part but who am I to take the day away. Day 2 was a bigger hit. We planned a visit through the visitors center and got to see more of the school. He also had the chance to talk to several students.

At 2:30 we went to the NROTC unit so he could meet with his freshman advisor. He toured the unit with a 3rd year mid, meet a current freshman and spoke with two LT's. I took the parental path and kept myself separated so he could be himself.

It was a grand slam. Everything went quite well for him and everybody in the unit were great. They know he was a academy candidate and let him know that they would support him completely if he were to apply again. They currently have a mid freshman that tried for the academy last year but did not got in, this mid reapplied and got in this year. The mid is not sure if he / she will now attend the academy because of the experience with the unit and the friends and bonds that were made.

There is light if you or your DS / DD does not get the BFE and the light comes quick. My DS will apply again but he was one very happy kid with the A2 choice and the NROTC unit.

Cheers to all!

So very glad to see happy kids making great choices. So happy for you!

For those pursuing a military college option or a civilian college option there is alot of question/answering going on in the ROTC thread to help you set your sights forward.

One bit of advice from personal observation. It has been offered repeatedly that the Math ACT is the single most weighted identifier on the application. If you are going through the process again next year, you do not get held to a lower standard because you are in college. You still need to compete against your slate. So many people believe that just getting straight As in college takes care of the academic portion of the application. Not so_One way to improve your scores is RETAKE your act/sat-again and again (my son took his eight times). How many times should you retake it? In my opinion until you get a 36/800 or until the BFE comes.

Suggest Asking Advisor

Respectful to Vista123...

My DS was told right out by his advisor at the academy not to take the ACT or SAT again. He went on to say that the college grades will carry more weight than the ACT or SAT scores. To that end this may only be my DS case.

Vista could very well be correct but just a suggestion to have your DS / DD check with their advisor and go over their application with them. Again, it could be a case by case thing.

I agree you can ask.

We have a very good friend whose son didn't get in upon re-application from a top school with straight As, a college sport, etc, with a 30 math ACT and was told straight up, he should have retaken that ACT by his USNA regional rep.

I also recently spoke at a gathering addressing school guidance counselors and parents on "helping the student get into a service academy" A representative from admissions was there. While drinking coffee in the speaker's room, I told him of my friend's story and he said that, yes As are important but even for re-applicants a high Math ACT score is needed and that he advises retaking the ACT.

Look, the slate isnt going to be any easier next year. You can definitely chose to rely on what didn't work the first time around. Or you can rely on the advice of General Hal Moore. Moore's dictum states that "there is always one more thing you can do to increase your odds of success"

Good Luck to All.

Ahhh...

I failed to leave out that the advisor added into the discussion something about him being in NROTC along with the ACT / SAT remark. Maybe there is some other way of reviewing how they all reapply.

At least the upside will be DoDMERB is all set for the next two years!!

Thank you Vista.

The single most important factor in a college applicant's file is his/her college transcript, and especially grades in calc, chem and/or physics. Earning As in those courses from a first-line school is a huge plus along with As in English and history.

Whether to retake the SAT/ACT depends largely on your scores. If your scores are already 650V/700M or above, you're probably ok not retaking. If they are lower, there could be a benefit in retaking. However, getting 800/800 won't make up for Bs and Cs in college.

I would consult your RD about whether it makes sense for YOU to retake. The answer may vary depending on your package.

LOL this thread has become nothing more than a rejected parents support group

I began this thread while we were still waiting to hear from USNA. Along the way we became a very close group of people who checked in everyday, had a lot of laughs along the way, comforted each other thru the TWE's and cheered for those who got accepted. We cared for each other and I shed a tear or two as my pals posted the receipt of bad news. Now as the process has moved on for some of us we are now supporting and encouraging each other as our children move onto their wonderful plan B's. If you haven't been on this thread since the beginning then you won't understand the camaraderie we have shared and that's your loss. This group of people are some of the finest people I have ever had the privilege of knowing and I am only sorry I cannot meet them all in person.

And we are from from a "rejected parents group". I admire the spirit and resiliency of all the parents and their children who have travelled this road with me.

I agree with 1984USNA. Prepswimmom has been very forthright with sharing her thoughts about the appointment process and has been a support for many other forum parents. Some of you are not always going to agree with her opinion. That's okay to disagree, but everyone should post with diplomacy and respect. I personally like to hear how the candidates of this group are doing.
