Still in the game

I keep turning back to the forum to check in when I have nothing to report. Planning to go check out material Sciences program at University of Washington later this week.

What did you think? Lots of my DS's friends are going to UDub, as we natives say :) Did you get any sun during your visit?

Not sure if you or your DS are readers, but the book "The Boys in the Boat" by Daniel J. Brown is an awesome read about the UW 1936 Olympic rowing team, absolutely fascinating and well written.

He thought it was a great school, absolutely amazing boat house and program for rowing. UW had a lot to offer definitely. A bit of Sun and yes our whole family has read "The Boys in the Boat" and loved it.

At the end of the day though he is selecting to go to University of San Diego majoring in Mechanical Engineering while rowing Division 1 and NROTC with the intent of reapplying next year. That is unless he gets the nod...well ANY nod (be it foundation, NAPS or USNA for that matter) from the academy. Still on our own "special" list in no mans land here.

In the 80's here and spring is blessing us with wonderful weather and great times on land as well as on water as we move along and focus on Southwest Regional Champs this week.

Lifting a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale to you all tonight.

Currey, here's hoping that the next thing you get to lift is a BFE from the mail box! Sending warm Florida thoughts your way for some good news this week. Glad to hear your DS isn't giving up on the Academy. Enjoy a second cold one! You deserve it!

fully embracing Alternative Plan A

After being such an active stalker, and occasional poster (I'm the one who burned the grilled cheese sandwich!) on this thread, I wanted to offer a post script (or post TWE as it were)...The first 24 hours was the worst, but as usual, the passage of a few days brought reflection and perspective. In our family we believe that God leaves clues, and looking back over the last year and a half of this process, He left many clues that WP was the right place for our younger DS. In my heart of hearts I know this is right, but the mom in me would have done anything to protect him from the hurt of that letter from USNA. But we have embraced all things Army, added magnets to the car and bought t-shirts for the whole family (even our mid - the best big brother - who posted a picture of himself wearing it on facebook). DS's boots and low-quarter shoes have arrived and are being broken-in, and the stack of paperwork is being signed, sealed and delivered. We've connected with WP parents on facebook and through the Parents' Club...and through this process we've been reminded what an amazing gift we have been given. The people we have met and the experiences we have shared with our USNA family have been wonderful, and now we get to experience the equally wonderful families at WP - how many families get to do both?! As I share this, I hope everyone else who has gone through the disappointment of the TWE will be able to embrace their new path (be it temporary or long-term), and move forward with excitement and anticipation :) There was still one dilemma - how to handle the Army-Navy football game. But a conversation with a friend today provided the answer - he said, "That's easy...just make a big sign that says Beat Air Force and you've got it covered!"

HA! Now THAT made me laugh!

that seriously needs to be a postmark in the viewbooks....LOL

Currey your DS will thrive wherever he ends up. Blessings to you all as you continue on your roller coaster.

We have had the same experience and are embracing and excited about USMA. Hope to meet you on R Day!

Greetings again, fellow former mailbox stalkers! I've been stalking this thread for the past several weeks and continue to root for Curry's DS. We have come to grips with DS's position on the WL, and he is pursuing Plan B. Wanted to share good news in light of previous info I shared about DS's NROTC application experience. Some of you may recall that DS's NROTC file was mishandled along the way. Well, we were able to get past that, and he received notice that he has been awarded a 4 year NROTC scholarship! He'll have to request that it be transferred, as he was not admitted to his top NROTC school, but spirits here are high. He still hopes to get pulled off the USNA WL, but NROTC is a great alternative for him for which we are grateful.

Best wishes to all working on Plan B and those reapplying!

Kayaker, great news on the NROTC front!

Currey, still checking in on you several times a day.

Fingers still crossed for you both and for everyone else still waiting to see what the future holds. As has been side before, the future is bright for all who have gone through this process regardless of the road taken. The process in and of itself is a hugh growth experience.

Congrats Kayaker! That is great news. My DS is also very excited about his upcoming NROTC year. Glad that our sons can still pursue their goals even if it isn't at the academy. All the best to you and yours!

Well if she is at the Classic next year we can show her around. Either way I will be there as I have the other DS in the V8 :)

Congratulations, kayaker! That is great news, and a wonderful path if USNA doesn't come through.

Kayaker,

Just saw over on the ROTC acceptance thread that your DS wants to transfer schol from MIT to UVA. I'm curious why, if he wants engineering, and can have NROTC in either situation. DH and I both graduated from MIT & there is nowhere like it for engineering (there was a thread about USNA vs. MIT sometime recently - someone was trying to make that decision). Opportunities for undergrad research on the vanguard are unmatched anywhere, and doors open the rest of your life with MIT on the resume.

There's my pitch:wink:

But whatever it ends up being - UVA, MIT, USNA - he can't really go wrong!

Thanks, navymom, usna02 and roseville! Still looking for good news for Currey ...

To answer your question about the transfer, MIT did not admit DS (what were they and USNA thinking?!) A dear friend who is an MIT grad told him to call MIT admissions, let them know about the ROTC scholarship, and inform them they made a mistake! Very unlikely he'll do that, but it could be fun! He seems committed to UVa if USNA doesn't come through. He still says he'll reapply to USNA if he doesn't make it in this year, but who knows? It probably seems silly, but I'm happy he'll be close to home. Once he's in the Navy, the likelihood of that happening is pretty slim, so we'll cling a little.
