Still in the game

Kayaker, congrats on NROTC!

I feel the same way about DS being closer to home. We were all perfectly ready for him to be basically gone, but now it's nice that we will see him more often. And for a guy, he is so excited about shopping for his dorm, cracking me up!

Kayaker, we have a first year DD at UVA. Not engineering, but happy to answer any questions about first year life. Congrats on the scholarship - there is a vibrant unit at UVA and I'm sure it would be a good experience - though I have to agree that an MIT engineering degree (that is paid for!) is worth knocking on a couple more doors for.

I was at the ACC tennis tournament this weekend and #1 mens player for UVA was this huge guy. Someone said he was ranked in the top 5 college tennis players in the country. I commented that since he is a senior he is probably getting ready to go pro, but rumor is that he is leaving tennis and going into the Navy for SEAL training. I thought that was pretty cool if it is accurate. I have no idea if he is NROTC or not there, but a great story none-the-less.

It's gotta be this guy: (Very big!)

Alex Domijan
Class:
Senior

Hometown:
Wesley Chapel, Fla.

High School:
Saddlebrook Academy

Height / Weight:
6-7 / 225

I googled Alex Domijan and read that he hopes to become a Navy SEAL, having been inspired by Pat Tillman. I recently read a book about Tillman and can understand why a young man would find his story of sacrifice inspiring. I didn't get a feel for whether Alex was in the NROTC unit at UVa. Hoping DS will be able to get the scholarship transferred ... and trying not to hope too hard that USNA will come calling after today's appointment acceptance decisions are made. Thank you all for the support. Wishing the best for all!

MammaMia, I will PM you. Thank you.

Alex is not in the unit at UVA. He has a very difficult road to become a seal since he was not in nrotc, the only other way is OCS or enlist. DS grads and commissions in 2 wks from UVA.

Its been done. There is a very inspiring auto biography called the Heart and the Fist, that all SA aspirants might read. Duke Grad, Rhodes Scholar, early 20's doing Humanitarian work, then OCS and Seal at the last age cut off. Have another friend who turned down Navy for Harvard. Then Seal. The founder of Blackwater quit USNA for a religious school, then Seal.

There are only 10 Seal billets for each USNA class. From what I have seen, that path isn't about ROTC or USNA, but having real talent, and a maniacal drive, and those play with any background.

Great book although I think it's something like 25-30 for each USNA class and around the same for the rest of ROTC/OCS combined.

Based upon discussion with a senior active duty SEAL for origin of recent year of SEAL officer candidates (~75 - 85 total selected/year) -
~28 USNA
~28 OCS
~14-15 ROTC
~15-20 lateral transfers from the fleet (typically 90+% USNA grads not selected directly at graduation)

We've come a long way from "still in the game!" Love it. I just ordered "The Heart and Fist." Can't wait to read it. DS said at one point that he aspires to be a SEAL. Doesn't almost every 18 year old who wants to serve think along those lines at some point? As his mom, I would be proud of him if that ultimately became his goal, but I would also probably turn a little more grey from worrying!

BTW, we consider today the beginning of the real waiting period for those on the USNA wait list. Those offered appointments have either accepted or declined. Now USNA looks at the WL. Still hoping here...

The Heart and the Fist: great book. Thought provoking and inspiring.

Good luck to everyone on the wait list!!!

In a sad little turn of events, one of DS's friends from NASS that had received a NAPS appointment and was very excited about it had her slot revoked a few days ago. The reason given is allegedly due to two migraines in a calendar year. My question - would she have been denied in another year? Or is it just because this year seems so bad in admissions?

Currey - any word yet? I think of you every day and still hope for the BFE to just show up for you....

Were these reported after DODMERB cleared her or did it come out of the blue? Sad and I wonder if they are re-evaluating head issues after Will died so unexpectedly?

All she told my DS was it was in her doctors report. Not sure if before or after DODMERB. But they were very surprised when it was revoked.

It came out of the blue yesterday - no warning - no former worries. Just rescinded NAPS appointment.
What a disappointment. Can't imagine thinking you're going, only to have the offer pulled later.

I suppose the lesson in this whole process - and life, too - is that it's not over until it's over. And it might not be over even if you think it is! The emotional rollercoaster is a a lot to handle for these kids; but they're resilient and seem to bounce back & go on to success anyway!

I sure hope she has a Plan B back up in place.

Do you know if it came as a TWE? Or did the academy call her?

Not sure, but it was yesterday so probably email. DS said it sounded like a waiver she applied for early on that they didn't think was a big deal then appointed her to NAPS. They were texting about it- she said it was very curt no explanation, was not even a mentioned issue anywhere in her process.

No news here from the academy other than that there is no news. On another note, son was awarded distinguished scholar and made it into USRowing Youth Nationals this week. Not bad, but he would trade it for a yes from USNA.
