Summer assignments

Youngsters to be do a fleet cruise (CruDes/CVN/SSN/SSBN/SSGN/Gator/FFG) and OSTS (sailing) or YP's.
Second class to be do PROTRAMID and other things like Weps Detail for PS, Internships, etc.
Firsties to be do PS, 1/c cruise (Same platforms previously mentioned above with the addition of VFA/VRC/VAW/VAQ/HSL/HS/HSM/HSC/HM/VP/VQ for the aviation types), Leatherneck for the USMC types, Seal TAD for the killers, and dive school for those who like mermaids. Of course various foreign exchange cruises and internships are available for those who want to apply. I'm sure I missed some things, and if you have questions about any acronyms refer to the googleicious or wikipedia.

In addition to the things marvin mentioned, some Youngsters serve as NASS squad leaders, and some Firsties to be also are NASS detailers.

Forget the XYZ. Daughter did Fleet Week in Boston on USS Bataan. Sailed 44's to Newport RI. Actually got to fly a jet trainer out of Oceana. Drove and dove a Boomer out of Kings Bay. Did four weeks in Lejune. Did five weeks in Tianjin China. Did tour in Newport News and sat on the beach. Now doing Leatherneck at Quantico. Will be second session detailer and then four months studying Chinese in Beijing. Home for Christmas and then last semester and graduate. All I got to do was ride in Huey's and sit in a lot of webbing in C-130's. What a life experience for them. The summers are filled with more than you can imagine.

The XYZ was the answer to his question. I can get specific. I did Summer School x2, YP's (Boston-Long Island-Halifax-Boston), SSBN (Pearl Harbor-Bangor), NOLS Alaska Mountaineering, PS detail (forced), and Forex to Sweden. As a side note, they tried to make me do Leatherneck, tried to make me do PROTRAMID, and wouldn't let me do an aviation cruise. Summer training is a black hole, unless you pay for it (NOLS) or get lucky (Sweden). Wait and see.

Also, there are various internships that can be conducted during the summer.

So not everyone goes through PROTRAMID? Random question, but how about the infamous tear gas chamber (during Marine week I think?)...does everyone go through that or does it depend on your summer?

Not a great problem and I apologies if I seemed confrontational. Most of the people on this site asking questions are not familiar with military nomenclature. They need specific answers as to what their MIDS may be doing over the summer "An English Translation" during 0 Block and the rest:thumb:.

My understanding is that they all do PROTRAMID in one form or another. Don't know about teargass at Leatherneck but they do work it into your friendly visit to Lejune. You have to do something during the summer but at least one of them will be exciting.

No gas chamber during protramid, leatherneck as AF said mabey, and there are ways to not do protramid (or an equivalent) but it is the minority.

No problemo AF. Sounds like someone is hooking your kid up with great summer training.

I actually just finished protramid, and we did get tear-gassed during marine week. It really wasn't too bad. My eyes just ran for awhile after I got out.

Enlisted "get the gas chamber" in boot. I'm guessing from what I've read here that isn't the case during PS? Last week I heard DS1 tell DS2 how to do it without any problems. Maybe DS2 won't need that advice until later.

Leatherneck is over and got the following text from my mid:

Dad,

Leatherneck is a killer, I'm exhausted and my whole body hurts. I have really bad blisters on my feet, that it really hurts to walk. I won an award that got me a pair of Marine Combat boots. I'M GOING TO BE A MARINE! It's an awsome day.
