Summer Seminar Participants

Chin ups are not allowed - just pull ups. Like people have said before, practice is the only way to improve on pull ups. Keep on at it, hopefully 3+ times a week, and do let your arms recover after a particularly hard workout. One thing that is not mentioned is the issue of weight. I'm sure not an issue for most candidates to USAFA, but losing five pounds of baggage (hard running is good at burning calories, as well as improving cardio) while continuing to practice pull ups will yield excellent results. Just a little extra bit of weight can have a large detrimental effect on pull ups.

Unfortunately I have the opposite problem (have to work to keep my weight up) so that's not really an option. I've been using an assisted pull-up machine at the gym. Hopefully it helps.

Session C
I'm from Cincinnati.

I think I'm okay on the pull ups and pushups.. how many do you think we need to be able to do? I'm a rower so that's not so much of a problem as running is for me. My knees are not that great (runner's knee in both knees) and I wear knee braces while rowing so I'm concerned about that, I don't want to wear them because I don't want them to think I'm not good enough..

But I'm really excited!!

How many pull ups and pushups do you need to do for Summer Seminar? Zero, as far as they're concerned. I know they write an evaluation of you with your CFA results at the end of the week, but I think as long as you are trying your hardest (everyone else at the practice CFA will be) and get a decent score, it's all that matters. There is no "minimum" at SS, like there is for the actual CFA that's part of your application.

I updated the other people too.
Has anyone else had a problem with their school and leaving for the extended amount of time?? I am going to USAFA SS and USMA SLS and my school is telling me that I will have to take my finals when I get back in July. By then I will have most likely forgot and stopped caring about school by that time and will be in summer mode. Any ideas on what I should do?

My school has one week (finals) left when I come back so I'm taking them then. Try asking your teachers if you could possibly take their tests early? Or have alternate assignments? Sounds like a *fun* situation. Good luck, the experience of Summer Seminar should be worth all the trouble for sure.

I am missing school for AFA SS and missing finals week for NASS. My councilor said I can take my finals the week after I get back, but my grade principal has not em-mailed me back to confirm this. Teachers are usually required to be there at least a week after students leave, so try seeing if you can do them then.

Lucky for you, your school actually cares for your well-being. Thank God I picked a week that wasn't going to conflict with my finals because if I was in your situation my school has a policy which allows teachers to fail us if we miss the test. Even with a reasonable excuse, I would still receive a fail. Though in the case your teacher actually cares for you, then that's a different story, but most of the teachers at my school wouldn't give a rats ass if you didn't show up for their final. One less test to grade. lol

Wow. That's bull puckey!

Lucky for me, I get out May 29th, as long as we don't have a snow day from now until then :shake:

And Cross Country practice starts beginning of June. Not mandatory, but it will give me some time to work on my distance before getting to 7,258 ft above sea level.

That sucks that all of you guys get out of school so late so you have to deal with the finals issue...that would be really stressful. I get out on the 27th even accounting for a snow day.

Its so funny to hear about all the worries about the altitude. It never really occurs to me because I live at 6500 feet.

My son gets out on June 10th, but we never even considered possibly having him take finals when he returns (he is doing all 3 seminars). The schools were very positive about the experience and assured him that they will work with him and his teachers to make sure everything is complete before he leaves. :thumb:

Yeah, he knows several others through the boards or facebook who are doing it. Navy 30 May - 4 June, WP 6 -12 June, AF 15-19 June. You could also switch Army and Navy and still have it work, or do the WP, AF, then Navy, but that involved flying out from AF at 6am directly to USNA, which he thought might be a bit tiring!

Incidentally, he is doing all three for various reasons. He has always wanted Air Force, so that one was a given. However, because of the possibility of flying, and his interest in aeronautical engineering, Navy is his second choice. But he's never been there, and has gone to the sports camps at both Army and AF. Plus his dad and I are WP grads, so we'd really like him to go check that one out one more time (last time he was 11!) before he makes a decision.

I thought between the three service academies, Air Force had the best Aero/Astronautical Engineering program. But maybe my information was biased.
EDIT:
For engineering degrees, Aerospace/Aeronautics/Astronomical; Air Force is Ranked #2 in the country; Navy is #4. For Electrical/Electronic/Communication engineering; Navy is #5, West Point #6, and Air Force is #7 in the country.
According to Christcorp on page two of "How do you deal with stress" page.

That's cool that he's exploring all his options.

I'm just in love with the AF haha.

The thing that REALLY sold me was that the AFA had the #1 for "Professors make themselves available" from Princeton's Top Colleges for the last..correct me if I'm wrong...3 years?

I'm going to be at the same Navy and Air Force Sessions. I might see him there. :thumb:

Well, I was taking that as a given!

He's about 99 percent certain that AF is what he wants. Unless something at the seminars completely changes his mind, going to the other two would be to help him determine his choices for the other twoif he didn't get into AF. He does know that he still wants either of the other two academies WAY above any civilian college.

And we also read the Princeton Review that said that in the notes columns as we were studying for his ACT together (which he incidentally got a 35 on! :thumb: ).

I'm sure he'll have a great time at the summer seminars. I had a blast at the AFA SS, but I'm sure the others will be just as fun/exciting. Good job and good luck for your son!

I just called USAFA to give up my spot this summer because something unfortunate has come up :(

...so hopefully someone will get my spot :)
