Summer Training Changed Again

DS, class of 26, has had his summer training changed multiple times. Initially was supposed to have YP cruise, then got “drafted” for MAGTF, and now just informed us that it changed to CSTS (sailing?). I don’t think he requested any of these (as far as I know), and we certainly already knew changes occur often.

Just got me wondering if this is normal, and who actually makes the training decisions? Are the Mids able to request changes themselves? We don’t get much info from our kiddo. He’s happy with everything- but I worry do the changes mean something?

All it means is he is experiencing the one constant in military life: change. The needs of the Navy drive everything, in this case, USNA Summer Training Office had to do some redistributions across block dates and types. Maybe a YP is broken and needs repair, can’t be used at the moment, so X mids must come out of the block. Maybe the supporting operational commands in the Fleet or Corps have a higher late-breaking operational priority and cannot support as many mids. Maybe some classmates got placed in involuntary summer school, and their warm body has to be replaced by any available warm body in the original training block. Maybe some classmates got ill or injured and can’t be on the sailboats.

Mids are always able to request changes. Whether they are approved or not will be determined by policy, precedent and those pesky needs of the Navy. Changes to summer training assignments tend to be part of a daisy chain.

This is when Navy people utter a cheery aye-aye and proceed to execute, a well-known phrase for “suck it up, those are the orders, now go do it.”

No one has said it yet, so I will: “Semper Gumby.” (Always Flexible.)

That’s right up there with “The needs of the Navy [or Marine Corps]…” Along with “Hurry up and wait.”

It doesn’t get much better after USNA. DD is now 13 months removed and, more than ever, must live by Semper Gumby.

... same here, DS just left Camp Lejeune enroute to the yard. He told me at the beginning of Protramid that their schedule is day to day due to mechanical/engine failures. For the second block, I think he still doesn't know if he is sailing or cruising.

“It” happens - and it’s happening to a lot of ‘26 kids best I can tell - and these kids would all be great spooks as tight as they are with information..

Par for the course. I wouldn’t read into it at all. Ship’s schedules change, training department tries to accommodate people arriving late/departing early from trainings, sailboats/YPs break, etc.

You will learn as parents that your kiddo isn’t doing XXX until he/she is enroute to XXX. Mine just took off for an adventure, and honestly (not an exaggeration), I didn’t have confidence it was happening until wheels up on the plane. THATS when I’ve got confidence it’s happening! Things change all the time.
