Summer xROTC updates

Just got off the phone with AROTC MS I DS. He called to express disappointment at not winning Cadet of the Semester, and therefore, having no shot at cadet of the year. He bemoaned the fact that the difference was that he did not address the cadets administering the test by their proper ranks.

Pre-ROTC DS would have stewed over this for hours, if not days. He would have made it his life's mission to fight this "injustice", with no regard for collateral damage, including to himself.

My happy story is that he only complained for about one minute, before saying that he is happy for the kid who won, because he is a really hard worker and they have a lot of respect for one another. (Translation: I'm smarter and run faster, but he deserves the award more than I because he earned it.) He is definitely benefitting from quality of those who surround him. This is a whole new thing for DW and me.

Along those same lines, he also asked if we could pick him up several days after dorm evacuation day because he wants to stay for the battalion's commissioning ceremony. He asked us to come so we can meet his cadre (if that is the right term).

He is definitely ready for school to end. He is tired of it, but said that ROTC has been the best part of his college experience. It sounded like it made the year bearable if not enjoyable. For him, 6:30 AM ruck marches and PT were a great counterpoint to the skull-hammering tedium of physics and organic chemistry. Nighttime land nav is fun. Writing mathematical proofs is not.

Bottomline, it has been a great year in ways that he doesn't yet even understand. He is discovering that the universe doesn't revolve around him...all the time.

I told myself I wouldn't do this but here it goes anyway. When DS went in for his Project Go physical, MD discovered a cyst which will be biopsied tomorrow. MD said she didn't like it. I told him not to read anything into that statement. It's her job to dislike all medical abnormalities. Haven't researched it, consulted MD friends or mentioned it to anyone. We'll wait for the test results. There is too much to be grateful for to kill the buzz worrying about things we can't control at this point.

Great tale CB. That first year of ROTC sure changes them. We've noticed similar things with our DS. Hope your's is A-OK on the medical front and that his Project GO adventure is a great success.

cb7893,
We will be praying for your DS that everything is OK. Congrats to him for a successful first year!

CB your story sounds so familiar, frim the cadet boards to the wanting to stay the extra week. Congratulations and you deserve to be proud. I'm hoping that the dr gives you good news but sounds like you will be fine. Just fyi my D had a medical issue first semester which requires 4 days ICU and hospital stay. The cadre were behind her every step even assigning people to be with during her stay at the hospital. All good now and waiting for year two.

After slip-streaming in the guise of a clueless MS1 cadidiot, Cadet Delahanty got his head in the game his second year. A native Bactrian, he wound up busting both humps. Result: he won academic and battalion awards, and earned himself a busy summer. Joining Ranger Challenge may have been the catalyst. I recommend this if you have free time between 5 and 6 a.m.

So far so good, but here's the problem. Last year in anticipation of a summer slot (which didnt come through) he was issued a military id indicating his rank as staff sergeant. I'm pretty sure that was why we were so courteously treated when we visited West Point.

This year his new id gives his rank as private first class. I'm not sure we will be able to live down the disgrace of this double demotion. If we can't get satisfaction from Sec. Panetta and decide to go whole hog over it, I will arrange to post our family hara-kiri video on You Tube.

You always have the most humorous reports. Loved your (I'm sure intentional) "typo": candidiot. Glad to hear that Cadet Delahanty is flourishing.

I love these threads. I am really happy these DDs and DSs are doing well. I have learned so much from this forum. It is a gift for so many of us.
Son is finishing Norwich in a couple of days. Had a great semester. Bold Leader Challenge in Feb. Really enjoyed the time with his friends. Commissions next saturday and graduates sunday. Starts BOLC the week after. He is happy with branch and assignment. Was going to start BOLC later in the year but got an opportunity to move up. He appreciated the consideration and happily accepted. Maybe some one had a educational delay and a spot opened up. He got a nice apartment already off the base and leaves three days after graduation from home. He wrote the story of RP. Will try to get something done with it in the next few months. He does though seem to have bigger challenges on the horizon. We will miss him on the Jersey Shore this summer.

Best Wishes and Good Luck to all.

@NorwichDad - Congratulations to your 2LT. I know you all are proud and rightfully so. Probably best to dive right into BOLC while one is still in the groove. Please say hi to Snookiefor me.

Thanks Kinnem, Nice job by your son with the grades and the PFT. He must be a beast at PT.

I will pass on your best to the Snookie. Saw her in a store last year. It is really a big circus. Thankfully it takes the crowds away from the rest of the boardwalk.

My son also had a productive first year. He survived Calculus I and II, and managed a 3.3 GPA as a Mechanical Engineering major and in the Honors College. He enjoyed AROTC, and passed all his APFT's. Last week he met with the PMS, who advised him that unless he "screwed up big time" over the summer, he intended to validate DS's 3yr AD scholarship, and he will contract upon returning to campus in the Fall (a new PMS will actually report in next month, but I certainly assume that he will follow the recommendations of the outgoing commander.) Overall we are very pleased.

@leapyear - that's great news on the scholarship validation and a damn good gpa. I'm sure your assumption regarding incoming PMS is correct. No doubt DS will keep his nose clean over the summer.

My DS will have a new MOI and PNS in the fall. Fortunately the AMOI remains so at least someone on the Marine side who will be familiar with him, but he'll need to look Sharp those first few weeks. So far he is keeping up with his workouts. Right now he is at Virginia beach for a few days with some other MIDNs in his unit. Supposedly they're doing beach runs and surf swims. I have my doubts.

In an ironic twist the outgoing PNS is Capt. Coolidge. The incoming PNS is Capt. Koolidge. I hope DS can remember the new guy's name.

Any summer/Xmas break for Midshipman?

Our son has Naval academy appointment. He might accept it if his bid for few schools are turned down.
If he goes to Annapolis, we are wondering if he gets any break (how many days) during summer./xmas I could not figure out from their website.

I appreciate your information based on experience and thank you in advance.

They will have a Thanksgiving, and Xmas break like any other college student. During the summers they usually will do something, so it may be that they are only home for a month or so.

If he attends the USNA, he will leave for I-Day @ July 1st. The USNA forum can give you a better guide regarding summer breaks, and opportunities offered to mids.

xmas looks like two weeks. You're right, summer is hard to tell. Not clear to me how many training blocks one has to do over the summer, but it looks like they'll get about 4 weeks off. Of course if the need to, or decide to, attend summer school then all bets are off.

If you are a parent that is trying to schedule a family Summer Vacation, make sure that you discuss your plans with your DS/DD. These plans will need to be arranged around your DS/DD training schedule. Your DS/DD could be scheduled for Airborne School, Air Assault School, CULP, CTLT, CFT, or New Cadet Orientation. These events are usually scheduled well in advance but there are often a few last minute substitutions.

I know the CULP slots will be announced in December or early January (based on that is when DS was notified last year). But when should MS II's find out if they are selected for an AROTC summer school slot, eg. Airborne school?

It must depend on the brigade, my son's battalion has secured one Airborne slot early, the rest will probably come sometime the start of the next semester.

DS said of Norwich U that soon after returning to school second semester, cadre ask cadets their preferences and usually have an internal OML based on grades, PT and a few other things to award usually in March.

Summer schools are a great experience, added training and can (i think) add points to national OML score. If certain schools are complete prior to comiisioning it will only open more opportunities and speed up time to first PL position.
