In the instruction to appointees hand book there is info about a 250 meter swim, and in two different spot it says there is a minimum of 5 mins and 9 mins. Anyone know which one is correct?

From my swimming classes, I remember 5 min being near the cut-off to validate the class and 9 min was about the cut-off to be put into basic swimming (a longer course meant for those with no swimming experience).

    Three options for swimming:
    Validate
    Normal Class (8 lessons)
    Basic Class (16 lessons)

Are there any negative repercussions in taking the basic class such as limiting room for other classes?

As hornet said, you have to take an additional 8 lessons of swimming. This doesn't limit room for other classes since the two periods are already blocked off for PE. However, most people probably have better uses of their time than basic swimming.

I HATED swimming class. For me, it was like a two hour beat-down every lesson, with a "D" at the end. That said, I swim about as well as a brick.

The advantage to basic swimming is more practice and a couple standards are a little easier. The disadvantage of basic swimming is that the class is twice as long!

...now, basic Water Haze is only 8 lessons, so that is a good deal for weak swimmers!

So if you pass the first test in under 5 mins you don't have to take swimming at all?

    Thanks for the response.
How does being a mediocre swimmer affect your officer career, such as a restriction in certain jobs?

Well, if you are not good at swimming, you probably won't make CRO/STO (special operations officer jobs) since the entry tests for those have a lot of swimming. Now, USAFA classes won't directly affect that. I only say that because if you stink at the USAFA swim classes, you probably won't do much better at the tougher selection tests after graduation (unless you REALLY practice).

Thanks, what about for rated officer positions, is there a water course involved in the training process?

Yes, but I wouldn't worry about it. If you can pass the academy's courses, you'll be able to pass the others.

What happens if you validate the course? I've been swimming since I can remember, and used to be a club swimmer on top of varsity high school, so I'm a pretty strong swimmer and may validate.
