Any input on the NROTC units at Vanderbilt and University of Texas in Austin? DS visited Texas and loved it. They’ve been so welcoming and supportive. Not feeling the same support from Vandy but planning to visit next month. Any intel? Thank you!

I'd choose the school first and focus less on the actual NROTC units at that school. They both have NROTC units hosted on campus. Unit staff and leadership come and go, as will the midshipmen in that unit.

Vandy likely has a smaller NROTC unit than UT Austin. Not necessarily a bad thing, there are pros and cons to both large and small units. My unit was very very small, but it was a great experience for me, and my school was my first choice school

All great points. Thank you. We were surprised that UT’s unit is actually quite small.

Just look at school. The unit leadership will change over time, and the curriculum is the same no matter what unit you go too. If you don't like the school as much as another college, it doesn't matter how great the unit is.

Loved UT Austin on my visit. Great school all around it had everything I wanted. Great academics, great location, and great sports teams.

Hello! Current 3/C at UT right now. Not sure about your situation, but we really do have a top tier unit. I'm obviously biased but please let me know if you have any questions at all.

Two excellent and awesome choices. IMO just really boils down to whether you wanna be at a large or a small school. They're both in great cities, both in the SEC (one more football and one more baseball focused) and both stellar academically. You won't go wrong with either choice. Just large or small school are what you're weighing. And Vandy does provide a $6k stipend for room/board, although that may come out even with what the cost is there versus UT-Austin. If you live in TN you can stack that with the Hope scholarship.

Will 100000% echo top comments; school > NROTC is by far more important. Academics, culture of the school, big vs small school vibe etc will contribute greater to mental health, day to day academics, etc. this will also translate to success in NROTC or not.

Leadership (both MIDN and active duty) will change often !

Several years ago, DS #2 earned NROTC scholarship to several schools including Vandy. He was later medically DQed.

Vandy's NROTC unit was headquartered right across the street from my high school. I am a Nashvillian by birth and upbringing so I am biased. The PMS was very laid back and very understanding of the fact that the Mids were in a competitive academic environment.

Both Austin and Nashville are ridiculously over developed.
