“The fourth-class system is the military training and structure of cadet life that molds the young men and women who come through The Citadel’s gates. For the Class of 2027, it began on August 12, Matriculation Day, when the freshman cadet recruits moved into their barracks and prepared to begin their cadet careers.”

This looks so awesome! My DS initially said he did NOT want to attend a SMC. However, now that he has earned an ARTOC scholarship, he is seriously considering The Citadel. Kind of threw me, because he had always said he wanted ROTC to be part of a "regular college experience." However, he's a pretty hard driver and I could definitely see him doing it IF he's 100% all-in for the challenge.

Doesn't hurt that The Citadel offers some really good perks for ROTC scholarship winners. Would be interested in hearing from any cadets who thought they were going elsewhere but perhaps shifted gears and chose The Citadel later in the game from a college search perspective.

Yes, I have found this generation is often overwhelmed with the amount of information and choices. My oldest grandson started out focused on Penn State (both parents are graduates of University Park) but has narrowed his choices to smaller schools with smaller engineering programs. The smaller SMCs do challenge the kids, but this helps them focus, and they also have a natural community among their classmates going through the same challenges. Good luck to your son.

My DS is a super social guy. My worry about college is will he nail down the academics freshman year. I don't think I'd have to worry about that at The Citadel. They have a mandatory 3-hour study time every evening.

I'm happy to offer some perspective as a parent of a senior. My DS is graduating in May and commissioning into the USMC. Congrats and exciting times for your DS.

That's awesome. Congrats to your DS!

Obviously, I think being a Citadel parent would be more stressful than being a typical college parent, especially during knob year. My guess is that if you can survive that, your kid can get through the next three years.

My daughter is going throug Rec day Friday. Its a tough place but she absolutely loves the school. It isn't for everyone. It blows my mind that kids go there and are shocked by the physical and mental aspect of the school. (Watch some youtube for goodness sake.)

Congratulations to your DD. I've seen the videos of the knobs crying when it's over. Must be such a relief, elation and feeling of satisfaction all rolled into one.

Congratulations on your son receiving an Army ROTC scholarship. My DS is a current junior at the Citadel on a 4 year Army ROTC Scholarship.
I would be happy to share his experience and ours as an out of state parent too. Just send me a direct message.
The others on this thread all have excellent advice and can provide some amazing support from their experiences.
I know they helped me several years ago when I was in your shoes.
Enjoy this time of selection with your ds, it's an amazing process.
