I've had a really big problem going into my 3rd year of running Cross Country. I believe I'm fit but I don't see myself getting a Varsity spot on my team. My mile time in freshman year was a 5:30 and I no longer do track due to joining swimming and they are during the same season. I have improved in Cross Country (from a 20 minute to 18 minutes from my sophomore year) but everyone else is much faster and I will most likely never get a varsity spot.

So my question is, will West Point recognize a fast mile time (I ran it last week @ a 520 without specific training) even though I have no varsity letter?

    The short answer is No.

Athletics is about leadership and teamwork for the application, not a specific athletic accomplishment. Varsity letters are seen as recognition that you can work in that system, with being a team captain a mark of high peer leadership.

You'll get to show your athletic/physical ability, and specifically the mile, on your CFA.

Get a varsity letter by doing your best on swim team, go out for swim captain, and, separately, maintain your mile time.

I might have a chance at both of those but I'm still uncertain about being varsity next year and being a team captain. Any tips on trying to become captain? My coach kind of ignores me because he has a group of swimmers he's been training since they've been little and I fear they will get the title of captain on favorism.
