The Quiet Man

Time for my annual viewing of The Quiet Man tonight. I'm not that much into romance movies, but that fight scene is the best in movie history, and that's counting Blazing Saddles!

Best movie fight? Rocky vs Apollo Creed circa 1976 in Philly.

Or any of Tyler Durden's (either Ed Norton or Brad Pitt) bouts in "Fight Club".

But, yes, on Saint Patrick's Day it's a good day to remember one of the Duke's greater films. Partially filmed on location in the Emerald Isle in an era (1953) when that was very rare.

Five , Rio Grande and The Quiet Man are the best known . They were very good friends off screen.

Others:

McLlintlock!
Big Jake (not "Big Trail", "Big Stampede", or "Big Jim McLain")
Wings of Eagles

The Duke made 140 movies from 1930-1976. 73 of them in his first 12 years (1930-1942). Very busy. But pretty all of those early films were filmed on the back lot within a 15 minute drive from home, usually 1-2 weeks per film.

If you ever read her autobiography "Tis Herself" you'll learn a lot about her that most folks never knew.

She loved John Wayne, and she said she was the only leading lady that could handle him! She also loved the quote he gave once about her. Wayne’s description of her: “She’s big, lusty, absolutely marvelous — definitely my kind of woman. I’ve had many friends, and I prefer the company of men. Except for Maureen O’Hara.”

They made five films together:

Rio Grande
The Quiet Man
Wings of Eagles
McLintock
Big Jake

All absolute masterpieces.

White O'Morn.
White O Morn is in shambles and has been for years . It’s in Galway and has been the place where teenagers use to drink and tourists have picked the place apart for years . Literally falling down and with overgrown grass and weeds . The last I heard was an American had brought it and then never did anything with it and the local organization that wanted to clean it up can’t do anything without his permission . It’s been going on for years, my mom grew up not too far from it. Lot of tourist bus tours go through Cong and they all want to see White O Morn and they made some silly replica cottage which is also kind of trashy looking, I have pics somewhere of it , they actually have two mannequins dressed like Mary Kate and Sean in the place . I go back to Ireland about every two years or so , haven’t been since covid . All the places where The Quiet Man was filmed is near where my mom is from. She remembers all the excitement when the “Yanks from Hollywood” came over . Lot of locals were hired as extras at the time .

It is a wonderful movie and i enjoyed all the movies they did together. It was basically them two and the world's best character actors. He was over the top in many of the movies they did together and she seemed to bring him down to earth when they appeared together. They were a great team.

She was born in Cong and she then moved in with an aunt in Headford after her mom died when she was about 10 or 11. I never got the full story why she and her two younger siblings moved to the aunt‘s. She then came to New York as an adult. Dad was from Glen , Donegal.
