The TS Empire State VI left Ft Schuyler -The Bronx on May 9th for 90 Days at sea - they docked in the Azores last night. Other Ports include Gibraltar, Liverpool and Reykavik Iceland. If you are interested in following the cruise- this blog will keep you up to speed :

Fair winds and calm seas to all the SUNY Maritime Cadets sailing. Looks like a great trip. I always wanted to go to Iceland, so I'm very jealous. Have a great time.

Thanks Bruno for posting the link. Maine Maritime also left last week I believe.

It was kind of funny, I first heard about this from a friend of mine from Maine Maritime when the State of Maine was in Galveston last week. A few Maine Maritime Midshipmen cruised with SUNY instead of MMA, so they heard about it pretty quick through them. Couldn't find any news about it whatsoever until a day or two after. Amazing how fast news travels when you're dealing with a bunch of college kids with cell phones.

The Captain must have had murder on his mind for the harbor pilot and Tugboat in the Azores  but they completed their inspection and the Empire State is again underway enroute to Iceland.

BTW- one of the reasons that I follow NY Maritime is this picture which is on the masthead of their web site. My dad has this same picture which was taken while he was a cadet at Ft Schuyler.

His cruises were on the Empire State II or as he called it: "The Empty State" (the current ship is the Empire State IV) . I still enjoy looking at his old year books and trying to imagine my Dad as a young 19- 22 year old Cadet/Midshipman. He had good times on those cruises and he still has a lot of good friends- classmates and shipmates from those days way more than a half century ago. I think that you could do a lot worse for your college years than the experience you gain as a cadet at one of the Maritime Academies.
