"Turned Down"

While you’re living your best life at the local university, spend some time learning to say and write “I’m going to…” rather than “Imma…”

Yes, this is an anonymous online forum. But clear, compelling, mature use of the English language — both spoken and written — is an imperative for prospective officers.
Oh brother, give the young man/woman a break!

He/she just spent his/her entire middle school/high school career working hard to get good grades, participate in sports and community service, AND spent the last +/- nine months working their tail off to go through this arduous process of fitness tests, noms, essays, recommendations, etc, to be one of the less than 1% who volunteer to serve our nation. He/she is the best of us.

Everyone uses slang on occasion and this is an informal forum (perhaps you say y'all or buddy or some other thing on occasion). It is not indicative of the leader he/she is or will become. So just stop....

My DS is a pretty average mid. If you wrote anything to him that casually and you were a plebe, you would be one sore, tired, and sorry person. Time to expunge that form of communication.
Same goes for you "ders_dad" as "MidCakePa"

You're right - it came across as piling on.

Snail Mail of Rejection and Acceptance (Kids got four two turn downs one LOA one medical turn down then medical overturned and Acceptance) were a lot better than a posting on a web site but stressful. Lots of exercise out to the mailbox.

So if a candidate is turned down, and they have also applied for an NROTC, when will they know regarding NROTC scholarship? Any ideas? Also, What is better for their first year with intent to reapply - Corp of Cadets at VT (out of state for us) or at a local university without doing anything ROTC?

Back to our regularly scheduled programming!

Strongly suggest that you attend the school where you’d be happy staying for four years and can reach your post-graduation goal. If reapplying to USNA, you may be declined again. If that happens, will you be fine where you are?

If your goal is to become a commissioned officer, then Va Tech with ROTC feels right. You’ll be able to show how well you handle a plebe-like schedule in a plebe-like environment. If that’s good enough for USNA, then off you go. If not, then you’re still on track to get those butter bars.

Love how a lot of you took time out of your day to call a random applicant out for using the word "imma". Thanks for not only putting this kid on blast but for also polluting this thread.

Not sure if you've ever heard the interview advice about dressing for the job you WANT, not what you currently have but that is real and is repeated pretty often on this site.
What some of the experienced military officers and grads here are saying is similar to that only in the area of how you express yourself.
.
Hey, if you want to appear at your BGO or congressional interviews wearing shorts, T-Shirt and Flippy Floppies then YOLO but just understand that folks who dress a little but more conservatively might make a better impression. Same thing with how you express yourself around adults or other in authority. Some parents here are also taking issue with the negative comments but I know the military status of most of the longtime posters here and have not seen the experienced military officers and/or service academy leaders saying that they think it is just fine.

Bottom Line: You Be You but understand that people do judge you by how you express yourself and if you want to think that I'm polluting the thread then go right ahead and dismiss what I'm saying.

Please, take it down a thousand. I challenge you or anyone on this forum who hasn't done something stupid or not in their own best interest when they were young. Everyone on this site knows what they did and did not do when they were 17, even if they don't want to admit it to themselves. If your are USNA 1978 that means you are least 66 years old. Don't compare 66 to 17. Think about when you were 17. I guarantee you remember what dumb mistakes you made at that age, so keep that in mind. There is more than one day in a person's life especially when you are 17.

This usage I find acceptable: “Imma eat some bacon!” 🥓🥓🥓

There was one more day in my life when i was 17, it was a leap year….

I had to look up “imma.” Of course, I also had to look up YMMV when that was in.

I don’t care what language people use, as long as it’s civil. But some of the wiser folks on this forum are also older and may not be familiar with certain modern slang — and won’t take the time to look it up. So, younger folks should be free to express themselves however they wish, but doing so may risk missing out on some views. And that may perfectly ok with them.

I feel for those who received turndowns. I received turndowns to college, to grad school, and for jobs. It sucks. But it’s also part of adulthood. I’m confident that folks on this forum will be successful, though the path to success may be different than expected.

I’m an experienced military officer AND an academy grad and using a bit of informality on an informal forum is fine in my book. One of the things I learned at USNA and as a sub JO is when to turn it on and when it’s ok to turn it off. Pounding on a kid for using a bit of informality comes off as ”toolish” and “holier than thou.”
