TWE

My daughter received her TWE with no chance of Falcon or Prep one year ago this week. Of course she was disappointed. We sat down together and looked at all of the options: Civilian college, Accept her Type 7, or Self Prep. She decided she wanted to improve herself and reapply, so we researched all the prep programs. They are very different. She talked to NWP and attended as a free agent. She loved it there, made great friends, and will be joining many of those friends at AFA this June 26th. If you still want to attend AFA, I strongly encourage you to look into the prep school options. Call Mrs. D at NWP and talk to her. Whether you decide to go there or not, she will give you good information. I am partial to NWP - it is amazing and changed my daughter in many ways - but look into all of them. Don't wait.

Are you fully qualified? If yes, I think you are not eligible.

"Every year, some applicants to the United States Air Force Academy show great potential, but fail to gain admission to the Academy because they need additional academic preparation. From this applicant pool, Academy admissions recommends worthy students for consideration by the Falcon Foundation. There is no application process for this scholarship."

haha so essentially I'm punished for being academically qualified. I think I'm going to self prep then.

Also received the TWE this morning. Looks like it's gonna be NAPS!

Yep...a strange paradox. Too qualified for prep or Falcon but not qualified enough for direct...but not unqualified enough for prep or Falcon...strange.

I understand you are disappointed but I believe Falcon scholarships serve a different purpose than the Air Force Academy Prep School. Academically "qualified" is not the same as "competitive". I think Falcon Scholarships are geared towards those applicants that are "almost" there. JMPO...

http://www.usafa.org/FalconFoundation/About
"The USAFA Office of Admissions then identifies potential recipients of the Falcon Foundation scholarship from a pool of direct entry applicants who are qualified, but not competitive for entering the next class at USAFA. Those applicants who are deemed qualified but not competitive are rank ordered and contacted for consideration of a Falcon Foundation Scholarship."

Got my TWE today also, but really not upset at all!

I could have done better in HS, but now it's time for college, and I have a Type 7 AFROTC scholarship which I can't wait to use!

Going to be a great ride, and as long as I work hard, I'll get that commission!

Last year, my DS was academically qualified but failed to get a nomination to USAFA. He received 3 nominations for the USNA, but zero for USAFA, go figure. Anyway, he received a call on May 14, 2013 with an offer for a Falcon Foundation Scholarship. I don't claim to know all the rules and requirements for these scholarships, but you never know, some who received a TWE and were academically qualified may still qualify to be a Falcon scholar. BTW...my DS received an appointment to the USAFA in February of this year. It all worked out as I am certain it will for all of you great kids.

So do you think a 32 ACT (34 English, 34 Reading, 31 SR, 29 Math) and an air force computed 3.7 gpa was qualified but not competitive?
Maybe my SR and Math were my downfall. :frown:

As a parent of a current USAFA cadet I want to say that many of us follow these "waiting for Appointment" threads each year and share your anxiety and disappointment. We remember what it felt like when our children (and us) went through the Appointment process. Exciting....but necessarily enjoyable.

It is completely understandable that you are currently disappointed. Most of you are at the top (or close) of your HS graduating classes and have many other options/scholarships available to you. Please keep in mind that your hope/goal of attending the United States Air Force Academy does not have to end with this TWE. Unless you no longer are able to meet the age (or other) requirements; you should seriously consider re-applying for next year's class. By reapplying you will demonstrate an ongoing interest and perseverance in attending USAFA. Being turned down one year does NOT have an adverse effect on the next years application. In fact the opposite is true. The admissions committee and nomination committees know how difficult / time consuming the application process is....and they will take a positive interest in those applicants that show they REALLY want an opportunity at USAFA by continuing to improve their applications and continuing to try to gain an Appointment. If you work hard enough at this... you can succeed.

Good luck! :thumb:

DS was in similar situation a couple of years ago. 3 MOC Nominations to WP (none to USNA or USAFA), no direct appointment, on National Wait List, then TWE. Within days of TWE, USNA Foundation calls... he accepts. 4 Days before WP's R-Day, they call him, and tell him he has APPOINTMENT and to "show up on Monday". He respectfully declines, as he had made a commitment to USNA Foundation. Now, a few years later, he's thriving in Annapolis.

Point is... You never know how or when the tide will change.... you may end up in a totally different port.

I don't know what your downfall was. Perhaps someone on your nomination slate had a better app? At this point all you do is try and pick yourself up off the ground and decide what path is best for you. Which ever you choose....I wish you and anyone else that received a TWE the best.:thumb:

Thank you very much for the advice. I am blessed enough to have many opportunities. Just have to have faith that everything happened for a reason. It's hard seeing your dream for five years not pan out how you wanted it to. I think I'm going to self-prep myself and try again next year. Best of luck to all

Love this!! Sorry to hear about the TWE, but your enthusiasm to embrace your other wonderful options is commendable! Good luck!! :thumb:

TWEs suck but if the academy is something that you want there is more than one way to get there. Falcon Foundation scholarships will probably be coming out soon and you can always be a free-agent/self prep at prep schools like Northwestern Preparatory School which is dedicated to helping people achieve their dreams of become cadets or midshipmen! Look into the program or feel free to PM me with any questions.

33 ACT. 34 English, 33 SR, 33 math, 30 reading, AND a sibling who graduated from USAFA last year. EA applicant. Was assigned an out of star ALO, even though many in my area. Had no relationship with her and the " interview" via phone was very awkward. Think that is what may have done it in my case.

You are right on the money... congratulations on the scholarship!

DS did not hear. I guess he will hear on the 7th.From the scores posted here I know it will be bad news but I was thinking maybe prep. I wonder why they take so long on some applications. Oh well, we are working on what is best for him. The offer I felt was best he had to make a decision on already and decided against. What does Mom know? :smile:Things work out like they should in the end.:thumb: Hey, maybe you get an extra point if you are the last application they look at.

got that twe today... disappointed but happy that i know where im headed now :)

To Zach

I am sorry Zach, we certainly know that disappointment in our fam last year. I've been checking every day to see if you got the appointment, praying for you.

I love your attitude and the mental choices it took to get there. God has excellent plans in store for you. I am proud of you to have reached the distinction thus far, and look forward to see where He utilizes your many talents and gifts.

DS received the dreaded TWE yesterday while at school. Needless to say he and we are very disappointed. We all felt he had a great, competitive application, just like so many here in this forum. NJ District 5 got the better of him. Now it's on to Plan B and that decision. He'll be at either Western New England and ROTC with UMass Amherst or Quinnipiac and ROTC with Yale. Though we're disappointed, we are glad to have some closure (though he says he's re-applying to AFA starting July 1!). Things happen for reasons, he gave it his best shot, and for some reason he is supposed to take a different path. Good luck to the rest of you, those with the BFE and those with the TWE .
