Since having a good support group of friends and teamwork is so very necessary to survive at USAFA, I thought it might be a good idea to create a facebook group so we could all introduce ourselves. If anyone else would like to join, here is the link to the page: http://www.facebook.com/groups/134463456680358/

I'm pretty new at creating groups on facebook, so if there are any bugs with it, let me know and I'll try to fix 'em. :thumb:

I will not elaborate, but I will provide 1 bit of advice. Be VERY, VERY, careful what you post on your facebook page or your friend's facebook.

    words of warning....

Awesome, I hope I can join it this month!
However, at summer seminar the LAST advice my element leader gave us was to NOT say something stupid or silly on the 2016 FB group, else you'd pay for it at BCT. Apparently you get some sort of special treatment. Just thought I'd throw that out there:rolleyes:

I think there was already a 2016 parent facebook page started, because there are like 28 members already. If you want to PM your name, I can invite you to join. I'm not sure you started it, but it was a few weeks ago.

As Shawn and CC have said or implied, using FB to post cocky, silly, stupid, or in your face arrogant statements about how 2016 will be the best class ever, or how you will be a great AF officer is not advisable. Keep it low key and stay off the radar.

I will add in on this, but from a different perspective.

Anyone can join a group. Our friend, an AFA alumni, retired O6, GS15 step 10 with AF Homeland uses facebook as a RESOURCE regarding employment.

He never posts, but because he belongs to YOUR group, he gets to see into ALL of your pics and posts.

Teens think we in our 40's are not tech savvy. BS!

I have never befriended my children on FB, but because of backdoors like groups or be-friending a friend of theirs I can see everything they post. Every picture too.

Again, not all of you will get an apptmt., many of you will go AFROTC. Most likely you will join that Det's FB page. CC's will be able to see you. At our DS's school, a cadet was read the riot act because of underage drinking...friends your age will typically announce stupid things like...Man, you were so drunk, (underage drinking) etc! That picture where you were tagged just placed you in a negative light!

FB IMPO is like 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon. Be careful because it is not only cadets at BCT that will nail you, but it can also bite you in the AFROTC world.

OBTW, many posters here will remember back in 08 or 09 how an appointee posed next to a fighter on a stick with "MY JET" caption (paraphrasing). That guy on the bus because of that FB pic was "new meat", they ate him alive.

You want to be under the radar for BCT.

Join, create friendships, but if a MOB mentality occurs as in "This is the best yr ever because of competition level compared to 11-15" keep your mouth shut.

If my one FB cadet wasn't enough, back in 07, there was a cadet that made You Tube history being berated by a female cadet because he implied a "macho" attitude regarding women.

Thanks for all of the input. It seems now that this is not such a good idea. Even though the intentions were good, I don't want this to have even the slightest chance of being damaging towards the incoming class. I think I'm going to take down the group.

    Don't take it down.

    JUST BE SMART!

The military is about family. Your classmates will be your brethren for decades to come in your life.

You will need those friendships at BCT, at the AFA, you will want to be a team.

However, we are saying beware what you post because it can come back an bite you.

My favorite memory was on another site, college with SA threads. One poster stated that he and his twin were going to WP. Asian males from NY and he went over the top about how he was going to show the cadets. Basically BRING IT ON!

People laughed at him. Flat out reminded him how many male Asian twins do you think there are on I Day? Also reminded him that his brother was not a forum member may pay the price for his baiting. He got the clue QUICK! He not only put a target on his back, but because they were identical he jeopardized his brother too!

The joke was wear a tee shirt aka "I am with stupid" to protect his brother.

The cadets don't haze, but they are also not going to take it if appointees think they know all that! Worse yet implies that they had easier when they entered a few yrs back!

Again, create the group, but if you see it going south quick, due to bravado, leave! If you don't want to leave remind them of that itsy bitsy thing called BCT and the AFA cadets own you when it comes to shouting on the bus, butterfly kicks and how miserable life will be!

That would be a smart move.

It's also probably a good idea to enable maximum privacy on your profile. Facebook is a neat and all, but it can be pretty damaging.

The facebook page I am referring to is for parents only, that's why I offered to have someone PM their name to me and I could invite them after we verify that it is the parent and not the cadet or candidate.

Really isn't a bad idea, perhaps bad timing. Maybe something you and your classmates might want to consider together after BCT. Even then, know that the upperclassmen will be watching the page daily for chances to give your class exrta opportunities to become really good at pushups and flutterkicks.

Page is down. Good learning experience. May come back up after BCT but for right now, such a group could potentially be too damaging. Thank you again for all the input =)
