Hello everyone I am new here. Wish I had seen this great forum sooner. My DS is a candidate for 2021. He just completed his application which was a close call on his deadline whew! My question: We were invited to a holiday reception in our state. It's too meet other cadets and candidates plus families of. Is anyone here familiar with this reception? Can anyone give us details on what to expect besides meet and greet etc? Much appreciated.

We have attended ours each year now. We were like you. Wondering what to expect. It turned out to be a great way to meet parents of upperclassmen who have gone through, or going through, the same journey. A couple of parents have "adopted us" and have turned into great friends. We can share experiences with them that our friends that have traditional college parents don't really understand. Plus they are there to guide us and answer tons of questions. While our DS did get to meet some current applicants and upperclassmen who attended the event, I believe we have gotten way more out of it than he did. This will be our third one next month and our DS attends with us where he talks with applicants and ours does a Q&A (current Cadets and applicants/parents). We typically are not "club" people, but we have found our parents club and the friends we have met there to be very valuable. So, I believe it is definitely worth your time.

Great! Thank you. We are willing to go to any event they ask of us. We especially would like to talk to any AOL's that might be there since we've had little contact with ours :(

DS and I attended a Christmas 'grassroots' reception December of his Junior year. It was our first real exposure to the USAFA family and is a day neither of us will ever forget! He spent all afternoon interacting with a host of current Cadets. They were wonderful ambassadors and very impressive young men and women. As we walked down the driveway at the end of the day my DS turned to me and said "Dad I was made for that place!"

We returned the following year one week after he received his acceptance letter to USAFA & found it to be every bit as inspirational as the previous year, if not more so. He is looking forward to attending this year as a current Cadet hoping to inspire as he was.

That is so good to hear. My DS and I attended the Forum and of course our tour guide was a Cadet. He was all smiles telling us his story. You can see his pride all over as our tour went over the allotted time lol. Looking forward to hearing more!
