USAFA Orientation dates

Is there any truth to the rumor that the USAFA will be turning off the electricity at 1800 and not turning it back on again until 0600 as a cost savings measure?

adlades, does that mean that you think I was misinformed and they will have orientation in April? I'm new to this and trying to make plans.

No Divermom I don't think you were misinformed. I am actually concerned that you were told the truth. If the AF does much more "belt tightening" we may have to send our children with brown bag lunches, tents and additional clothing for training. Let's hope for the best on Feb 1st. :thumb:

My wife called up someone at USAFA today and one of the things she learned was that even though DS has a principal nom and everything has been turned in for quite a while and his status has been "Candidate" for months, he probably won't find out from USAFA until mid April one way or the other.

From what luckymacy's wife was told by USAFA staff, it doesn't appear that the bulk mailing of appointments is scheduled until mid-April this year. I know that logic often doesn't apply to such situations, BUT an April orientation would not be very effective if 80% of the appointees are being notified during the same time period. luckmacy's intel does provide some support to the no orientation option.

Not to throw a wrench into anything, but I talked to my son's admissions counselor today and was told that the vast majority of appts. will be sent out by March 15. Not sure which staff member to believe, the one I talked to or the one who talked to luckymacy's wife, but I'm hoping its March. Not much we can do about it anyway!

I have no knowledge about a date for sending out additional appointments. My question to my DS's admissions counselor was, "Once my son accepts his offer of appointment, will he receive notification regarding the date for an orientation at the Academy?" She said, "they were thinking that there would be no orientation this year. At least that is what we have been hearing." I asked about purchasing boots early if there is no orientation date since we were advised to purchase them then. She said, "The boots are different now and since they are soft sided there was no need to buy them early anymore."
My son says that he was told to get the boots and run in them to begin getting used to them and to help avoid blisters. I know they can be bought online but there are many different choices so we were hoping to buy them in person.
Anyway, I hope that my information is correct and helpful and not misleading. Thanks for your information!

You REALLY don't need to buy boots pre-I-day. The boots that are issued are comfortable without being broken in, and the first few days of basic alternate between tennis shoes and boots to ease the transition. I bought a pair of boots at orientation last year, and I wish I didn't. A pair of boots is just another thing to carry around on I-day, and believe me, once you have to carry all your issued gear in your left hand, you will regret the extra weight!

Any appointees got the scoop on orientation? I think I remember the dates coming out about this time last year (if it is still on of course).

I just got back from a visit and my counselor said they aren't doing any orientations this year.

My DS was there too!

Hoosier - my DS was there yesterday as well. Hope you had a good experience and were able to tolerate the cold.

How do you get an early Orientation visit? If you have been offered an apointment your portal changes to schedule a visit?

I never scheduled an actual cvw, and I know my portal hasn't changed. However, I've visited the cadets multiple times, sometimes my friend would arrange the visit and I'd meet him at north gate and go to class and wrestling practice with him, other times I'd schedule it through admissions. Keel in mind I'm not coming from another state, so I didn't need to board at the academy although it might be cool!

You just sign up for a standard tour... It's nothing special for appointees.

I'd actually say it's a better experience than orientation if you tour before March, since you get to see what real 4* life is all about.
