USAFA Waiting Page C/O 2028

TWE in Florida. I am going to USMA
2 nominations, 35 ACT, tons of leadership, but turned down!
That's okay -- off to West Point I go!!
Turn down, GA-09. Going to West Point!
Quick story about my son. Last year this week my son got the TWE from USAFA, which was the only academy he applied to. So he doubled down and went to Marion Military Institute this year. Got appointments this time to West Point and USAFA. After visiting both and spending the year at MMI, he did a complete 180 and just yesterday accepted West Point and declined USAFA.

My point is, you never know, and don't look back. Congratulations on joining the Long Gray Line!

Would there be an advantage to going to a military prep school such as MMI or NMMI compared to a traditional college for something like rotc? Do they hold the same amount of weight? I know in general it mostly comes down to how well you did and effort, but assuming you were to do equally well in both, would one hold more weight than the other?

I can't say for sure, but places like MMI are known commodities to the AFA (and other SAs). If I were to guess, I'd say that is the biggest advantage over going to generic U.

My DS woke up to a golden envelope with a turndown letter. These hardworking students deserve the world - but bad news and rejection are parts of life and my hope is for each of these amazing applicants is that they take rejection as an arrow pointing in another direction. I don't know each of these applicants, but what I do know is that every one of them is exceptional to have even completed the process of applying to a service academy, and their future is bright!

Thank you for the encouraging words!
Can I ask why he changed his mind?

Yes, the academic curriculum and environment of semi-military discipline at MMI, etc. is well known to the Academies and are certainly significant factors why they send their sponsored candidates there. I also think there is a lot to be said for being surrounded and motivated by others striving for the same goal: appointment to a Service Academy.

In a word, fit. He still wants to fly, which is what attracted him to the AFA in the first instance. But in comparing everything else between WP and the AFA, he felt strongly that for him WP was a much better fit. And since he can still fly in the Army, although of course it isn't identical to doing so in the AF, he decided that overall WP was the better choice for him. To paraphrase what he said, he visited WP last month and left wanting to be a part of the Long Gray Line. He visited the AFA this past Monday and didn't come away with the same feeling.

My son received a golden envelope he was rejected from USAFA. My son says he isn't backing down and will re apply next year. If he does AFROTC at his University, can he still re apply to USAFA next year?
absolutely

Thank you. It was a really sad day around here yesterday. He received 2 noms, could have gone for music, or sport, but really just wants to fly for USAF.

Same story here for DS… TWE from USNA last week then TWE in the guise of a golden envelope this morning from USAFA. He did already accept an NROTC scholarship last weekend so somehow the TD today did not break his heart as much as last week’s TD. But, those who are still in the waiting game, keep your hopes up and don’t give up on your dreams.
