USNA Class of 2028 Waiting and Speculating

Plot twist for DD. She got a call an unexpected call from our senators office yesterday informing her that she received an offer of appointment. We were heart broken last week when she was TD, and today after midnight, the dreaded TD turned to a FQOA in her portal. The lady on the phone did mention a system error, and I'm thinking maybe she was one of the TD that was supposed to be WL. Still processing this, seems surreal, and immensely grateful for this second chance. DD will accept.
Really happy for you and your family. Been following and rooting for your DD. Congrats and so happy for you all after that emotional rollercoaster.

My guess is a waiver wasn’t approved for someone...

This is my logic assumption as well. The last couple years with later and later waiver decisions, there were increased WL appointments. I still think that for slates where the "winner" is awaiting waiver, the 2nd place is invited to WL in case. There are too many anecdotal data points to think otherwise, IMO. In DS' case, he was given an LOA at end, awaiting the waiver. I had assumed then that someone on his slate was likely given a WL spot in case that waiver was denied.

I don't think it necessarily works that way for rejected offers, as those have at least been offered. In the medical waiver case, it seems the SA would need to at least make an offer to one fully qualified person on the slate.

I am seeing a lot of people saying that they are going to reapply the next cycle even when they have appointments to other service academies in hand. I understand reapplying from an ROTC scholarship, but is putting a career on delay for 1-2 more years trying to get a specific service academy worth it to people? If so, why?

I have wanted to go USNA for over 10 years now, but USNA also was the only school that I received a "No" from. Going off to USAFA (also have USMA appointment and NROTC-MO 4yr Scholarship).

I feel like the perfect person to answer this question. In the game of life, 2 years isn't that much. For me, USNA was the only service academy I applied to, and that is because I only WANT to be in the Navy. I DON'T want to be in the Army, AF, USSF, USCG, or attend USMMA. I've got nothing against the schools, and perhaps I would have applied if cross commissioning was more common, but I don't care for those services as much. As for why people would reapply even if they are ROTC or a different service academy, its because it was their dream. Some peoples first dream was to be in the military, some was to attend that school. For me, USNA was my first dream, and service as an officer was my second. I look at it the opposite way, do people apply for the school or the service, and the reasoning for applying SHOULD be the second. Too many people get caught up with the prestige and pride of the school, they don't actually comprehend what they're signing up for. When you spend enough time with enlisted, you'll understand how much a DIVO/PLT CDR can affect people.

I don't mean to question you or anything like that, but if it was your dream then why wouldn't you be applying again. If your first dream was to serve as an officer, than that question doesn't apply. I'm also a middle child, so I'm stubborn as hell.

My momma heart is still so very heartbroken for you.

Well said.

You are going to make a great naval officer and DIVO yourself one day.

I appreciate the answer. As mentioned earlier, USNA has been one of my dreams for several years. But I am used to not having my way with my dreams (not for lack of effort or drive) and have learned to move on. However, despite I have all the reasons in the world to get caught up in the school or the service, (Dad attended and has served 25 years in the navy, it has my sport (others do not), I live in Annapolis, I have 8 different personal friends/mentors attending USNA, etc.) the goal was becoming the best officer I can be and serving with distinction to protect and defend the constitution of the united states against all enemies foreign and domestic. (take a deep breath, that was a long sentence) I see all three service academies as an opportunity to make myself the best of officers, and I believe I have to drive to knock over whatever walls I need to if it is necessary to commission in a different service. (On a separate note, I have heard that it is more possible to cross-commission from USAFA)

The idea that it is "only two years" can be flipped back on the user to "its only 4 years" I just find it surprising that so many people value "those 4 years" at a very specific service academy to lose two (not entirely) wasted years somewhere else instead of taking a very similar 4 years at a place similar to their dream school with similar outcomes. (similar does not mean identical, ik each service is different and offers different things, I have buddies in every service but Space Force)

Thanks again for the answer. Best of luck!

Perfect answer and this is why it is a tragedy you didn’t get accepted this cycle. I was praying you would receive an appointment more than anyone here, including my own DS. I even told him that and you are a perfect example of determination and grit. You have worked so hard and wanted this so much, I am deeply sorry. ❤️

Give it a few days to catch up in the system. If your son's portal has changed to Complete Pending Review instead of Pending, that is a sign that it will be within days. The Academy is obligated to allow MoCs to have the opportunity to contact their constituents to give them the news. Usually, 72 hours or so. Not all MoCs choose to do that.

And congrats to him!!
