All,

Been way too long since I went through this process, so I appreciate any gouge out there.

Our son has competed his application, received a nomination, and completed his DoDMERB (plus DoDMERB directed consult).

What is the next step for him? Admissions committee then medical waiver review or medical waiver review then admissions committee?

I know each commissioning source is its own waiver authority; USAFA & AFROTC granted a waiver for a single DQ. The single DQ was ”across the board” for all programs but we provided a lot of AMI to DoDMERB and drove down to suburban DC for a consult which resulted in USAFA & AFROTC granting the waiver.

Thanks in advance!

You wait....and wait..... any review is internal, and really doesn't matter which order (Admission Board or Waiver). In fact, depending upon when Application was completed, its likely Board has already reviewed his package and determined whether son is Admission Board qualified. The medical Q is separate from the Admission Board Q. Only advice at this time is to be patient, but if you get a request for any other medical information, respond promptly.

And each academy and NROTC unit makes their own determination for a waiver. Getting one somewhere does not guarantee that it will be waived somewhere else.

I think you meant that USNA & NROTC (program wide, not individual units) each have separate waiver granting authority.

That may be the case, but for my kid, I think his unit/UMBC medical were the ones reviewing for his waiver after he received the scholarship as a college programmer in his Freshman year. I do not think it was NETC that was doing it.

In fact, it was their review that triggered another DQ with DoDMERB, which we then had to rush to a cardiologist to get testing and documentation from them to submit to both UMBC and the USNA.

🤷‍♂️
