I just read over at the ROTC forum that a candidate was offered a 4 year NROTC scholarship, but that he had to accept it before a date about three weeks later. My DS, won't know if he's receiving an appointment to USNA until December at the absolute earliest, possibly as late as February, when nominations are announced (he has a LOA). He's 99% he wants USNA, but would otherwise do NROTC as the back up.

So, is this typical? Are exceptions made for USNA candidates? If my son was offered a NROTC scholarship, would he have to decide that quickly, i.e. before finding out about the Academy?

The answer is yes and no. If he recieves an NROTC scholarship he should accept it. If he later receives an appointment to the Academy he can accept that with no problem. The appointment supercedes the scholarship. The only problem might be is if you made some commitment to another college, which I'm sure you won't be doing.

My son accepted his NROTC scholarship and was then accepted to USNA. Not a problem. He didn't officially turn down his NROTC school until after I-Day. They didn't have a problem with that. In fact, the school understood exactly the predicament he was in.
