Valedictory Speech

I have to admit bias, but I liked my son's. It was also 2020 so I believe he quipped something about 'graduating on Zoom'. Small rural school, they managed a drive by graduation, and the selected speakers were able to be on stage with a podium. He also mentioned all of those who supported him and his classmates on their journey, from bus drivers to admin. It had to be approved by staff and had a time limit. Had some humor, lighthearted and looking toward their futures.

He went off script at the end to quote a line from a favorite songwriter of his,

"Well I traveled round and I ain't found nobody quite like you, time together well was time well spent
In my heart you pay no rent"

(obviously the lyrics aren't grammatically correct, but it was meaningful to him).

Something to remember whenever giving a speech regardless of what it is for............1) Be yourself, 2) Be brief..........and 3) Be seated.

If you aren't normally a comedian, don't try to be one during your graduation speech. People are more likely to remember a speech that is amusing but honestly, 10 minutes after the speech has ended few will ever recall what you said.

Agreed.

My son was self deprecating - he made fun of himself. He was friends with all classmates and was well liked by everyone.
