DS and I looked at USNA Validation policy. Strictly validating by AP scores, DS has AP=5 for AP Language Jr year, and is taking AP Lit this year. Does AP=5 for AP Language validate Eng 1 and 2, or does he need another AP=5 on the AP Lit to validate Eng 2? Also, any thoughts on the English 1 and 2 tests?

    Thx,

To me, it looks as if AP=5 validates just English 1 and then you have to take the test they administer to validate English 2. I could be wrong.

English Literature=5 or English Language=5 validates English I. You only need one or the other, not both. There is no way to validate English II with AP test scores.

The English I and II validation tests are essay responses to a piece of writing or poetry. The English I topic was straightforward; the English II topic was a rather cryptic poem for which I had neither the patience nor the energy.

Validation tests are on the second and third days of plebe summer. After the initial shock of I-Day, and then waking up the next morning realizing that there was no escape, focusing on some poem about flowers and birds (or something) is difficult.

With the AP scores, does that just get us a ticket to a validation test? Or does a 5 automatically get us out of a class?

    Thank you

    nuensis,

Makes sense and thanks for the info. BTW, I couldn't write an essay on birds and/or flowers on the best of days

There's no way out of validation tests. Even if you have a 5 on both English APs, you still have to take the English validation exams. Same for chemistry, physics, mathematics, and most other classes. The only class that I automatically validated was Constitutional Development, requiring an original copy of my score report proving that I earned a 5.

Unless you're already a NYT bestseller, don't expect to validate English II. You take it like three days in to plebe summer, right when everything is beginning crashing down on you. According to my English professor, any cases where plebes validated both semesters were considered "extraordinarily rare," as in 0.1-0.2% of the class. Some years yield no validations.

.1 or .2% in a class of 1200 is still 1 or 2 people. Not great stakes, but there's still a possibility.
