Virginia Tech ROTC Questions

I was asking this because I know at my DS alma mater, between AFROTC and AROTC (both hosts) they would hit 300, without including the NROTC that attend the university, but xtown for ROTC. Placing them around the same number of students that are cadets.

I just thought that because you could be in the Corps, but not necessarily in ROTC that their incoming class size would be larger.

I get it also depends on the size of the school too. However, my DD attended VT (not in VTCC or ROTC), and the school size was basically the same as my DS's, approximately 15% differential. VT has @32K and UMD has 37K.

What I think is interesting for candidates looking into a traditional ROTC program vs an SMC is the retention rate. If 350 start as freshmen and they have 1090 currently, their attrition rate is lower than the traditional ROTC program. @25% leave.

My curiosity question really is now...statistically how many are in the Corps, but do not intend to commission?

Or am I wrong with my assumption that you can be in the Corps, and not in ROTC?

Yes, you can be in the Corps and not in ROTC. The Citizen-Leader Track (VPI Battalion) runs along the same lines as the ROTC programs and has its own leadership curriculum and classes, PT program, etc. It's getting bigger; a few years ago about 20% of the Corps was in VPI and now it's up to about 25% (253 cadets at the moment, apparently).

I also have a question. I got accepted to Vtech early action into general engineering, but I want to drop out of the ROTC program as soon as possible. How do I contact Vtech into letting them know that I'd like to drop out of ROTC before attending? Would it also affect my acceptance?

It sounds like you are a HS senior, who hasn't started the ROTC program or school yet and plan to next year, but that in your application you indicated you would be participating in ROTC - is that correct? And, that you're wondering if your early action acceptance you received (binding for you and them) is contingent on your participation in ROTC at that university. The best source to answer this question is university admissions - please call Undergrad admissions at (540) 231-6267 or the VA Tech switchboard at (540) 231-6000, ask for admissions, and they will be able to directly answer your question.

The path to not participate in ROTC you haven't started is simply to not sign up. And if you already signed up but haven't started, you can let them know you changed your mind and will not be participating. I guess the nuance here is did this specific application or acceptance involve a commitment to participate in ROTC there? Were you admitted to the corps of cadets ROTC program, or just the university, or both

Normally admissions and ROTC participaton are separate and distinct in terms of obligations. But call them, and if you don't mind share an update with the board on what you found so future students can know what you are about to confirm.

Good luck.

I called the admissions and unfortunately the caller didn't have information, so they emailed the director. Later that day I got an email with information about dropping out and information that stated my application didn't receive special consideration for Corps of Cadets during admission process. This allows me to drop out of either ROTC and Corps of Cadets or just ROTC. To drop out I just need to email appchange@vt.edu and let them know that I want to drop both programs. Thank you so much!
