VMI is now sending out regular decision acceptances. My son received an acceptance letter on 1/28 so watch your mail box.

Congrats! I am sure that was expected. Is your DS still intent on TAMU?

TAMU is still on top. Neither his AFROTC or AROTC scholarships could be used at VMI so that is a significant factor. He has also received a USCGA Scholar offer so he may go that route. Lots of great options. Lucky kid!

Packer, those are *great* options your DS has earned, no doubt through lots of hard work. Congrats to you and to him. He'll do great where ever he goes.

Thank you all for your congratulations. He has worked hard for these opportunities and realizes opportunities like these are quite rare. I believe he will do his best to take full advantage of them.

Myself, I continue to worry about all of the things that could still go wrong. I imagine I will continue to worry but the time is fast approaching where it will be entirely on his shoulders and there won't be much I can do to help.

Packer: I know exactly how you feel. I am there with my DS. It bespeaks wisdom and self-awareness that you see this coming. I think you will do just fine. Of course, the moment of truth arrives when your DS looks around and asks "Where's Dad"? And Dad says: "Go forth and solve it, kiddo. You can do it." And then really leaves him to do it.

Son-of-a-gun, no safety net! That is pretty scary.

I made it, you made it and most others made it. They will do fine.

I'm still waiting for a few things to finalize -- The march ROTC board, recieving final word from WP on my admission there, and also talking to college staff and touring campuses.

Congratulations to all of you who have been accepted - now enjoy your last semester of Senior year of High School (without doing anything too dumb!) and use the spring to start getting yourselves into shape. The Rat line is unpleasant in the best of circumstances, but if you want to really make it miserable- show up out of shape.
One last bit of advice- if at all possible, I strongly urge you all to take advantage of STP. It will definitely get you off on the right foot academically and will also give you a chance to meet your classmates in an un-pressured environment.

I will second that..DS said it made the difference especially with grades and the bonds you make.. He had a dismal academic performance during the Rat Line and carried only 12 credits because he got Eng Comp out of the way at STP. Had he carried the extra class he may very well be on academic probation(his words). The friends you make will be your Brother Rats that will get you through the toughest time of most of your lives. DS said there was so much more to STP than he imagined. The Class work was very intense because you will be cramming a full semester class in a months time, but that also gave DS confidence.. you will not be bored. You will get your boots, gym dykes and your hay, become familiar with the Post and the Professors. It is very structured with rules and required and activities without someone treating you like a Rat. That time in itself prepares you for the changes ahead to some degree..."not near enough but better than nothing" according to DS at New Market. There isn't too much that can totally prepare you for what you will be going though, but it really helped. I figured the money was well spent..I saw it as sort of an insurance policy on the bigger investment of a years tuition. Had he flunked and I wasted all that tuition money for not spending the difference for STP I would have blamed myself. I know my son would be giving his all, and I wanted to do all I could to give him every advantage.. We ditched a family vacation to pay for it and I am glad. Just agreeing with Bruno that if there is a way to financially swing it.. It is a good investment. Many do get through without the benefit of STP so it is not impossible, but DS thinks that it made a great difference for him.
