I understand that there are many opportunities for different clubs etc, but how realistic is it to think about things like the Glee Club or taking a part in a play during Rat year. DS just finish his final HS performance, and he said that he was going to miss performing the most of the many things he was involved with in HS. My reply was..."They have this kind of thing at VMI too". He said that although he would love to do it, he doubted he would have the time or energy, especially prior to breakout. He has his mind set that he needs to focus on surviving, and only surviving the academics and the Rat Line, and then next year he may have more of an opportunity. I can't dispute his thinking because he does have his priorities in order, but what is the reality? Thanks.

If this is the kind of thing your son does for enjoyment now, he needs to make time to continue it during the Ratline. He doesn't realize it now, but the extracurriculars he's been involved with in high school can become coping mechanisms for him later on.

I was in the Glee Club for two and a half years. It was a necessary escape valve for me during the Ratline. Not because it got me out of stuff (if anything, it was an additional time constraint), but because it was time built into my schedule once or twice a week for a mental break from the Ratline.

The Ratline is different for everyone, but participating in the creative arts must just be his key to survival.

    Hope this helps.
