My son applied for VP and Presidential nominations, which he received the Presidential Nomination. Then he received a letter from USMA Admissions stating that he was on the National Waiting List before he came before his Academy Congressional Board Interview, which He received a Nomination from too. Confused as to what this all means? Does it mean that he is on the National Waiting List or still have a chance through his nomination avenues?
Don't want him to keep waiting for news from USMA and pass up his other choices on college. Any advice will be most helpful and appreciated. Thanks

He still has a chance through his Congressional nomination avenues. If he's not the principal nominee from his congressman/senators, he could still get an appointment by getting selected off the NWL.

The letter saying he is on the NWL means they looked at his application and he is qualified for an appointment. At that time with his presidential nomination they could not offer him an appointment.
Most appointments are offered from Feb-April so this is not over by a longshot.
If your son is still interested; i.e. West Point is his first choice then he should remain in contact with his admissions reps.
If he has not done so already he should send in his 7th semester transcripts and any other significant updates.

He should proceed to identify his second choice school as he is getting other offers. The nation wide date for accepting an offer of admission is May 1. There is plenty of time.

waiting.....

Thanks for your responses. After reading other "Threads" on this whole process I may have added more confusion to myself.
I know that my son is fully qualified, has received a Presidential and Congressional nominations, placed on the NWL. He applied for VP nomination but never heard if he will or will not receive that nomination. When does that get decided? How many candidates are appointed off the Presidential, VP and NWL?
He has already sent in his 7th semester grades and his waiting to see if he will be named Captain of his spring sport again. What more should he do to his file to make it stronger?
Thanks again for any information you may have to offer.

I believe the numbers are 100 appointments for Presidential nominations (unlimited possible to be handed out; if you qualify, you will be earn this nomination), only a couple slots under the VP per year, and for the NWL, the number of appointments that will be chosen off of that depends on how many slots the Academy needs to fill in the class so that varies per year.

To increase his file strength, I would just keep working on doing the best he can possibly academically and in leadership positions. There's not much more you can really do beyond that besides just hang tight and wait. I would contact your MALO for more advice if you're really worried.
