My son got a letter of assurance, his nomination, academics are excellent and he passed his fitness with flying colors. They asked for more information for his medical waiver. His doctors said he didn’t have these medical things anymore(they were from when he was 1 years old) they just denied his medical waiver with no reason. Is there anything else that can be done? I don’t understand how they could do this.

I'm sorry this happened. My son is waiting on a waiver too so we have been in a similar boat. To clarify, they medically DQ'ed him, asked for AMI and then denied the waiver because you weren't able to provide the AMI requested? Or did they only just now DQ him?

This is our biggest fear.. DS has a LOA and is waiting for a waiver but haven’t heard anything in over a month.. No AMI. Nothing yet..

We haven't heard a thing since mid-February. Nerve wracking for sure.

We provided everything they asked for after they asked for more information. The waiver went from medical pending to medical denial. It doesn’t make any sense. The doctors submitted everything they asked for and then they denied him. His waiver now says waiver denied. I don’t understand how they makes decisions when we gave them everything they asked for.

I'm not sure if they would be working this weekend (they might be since it's so close to 4/15) but your best bet may be to call or email your DoDMERB case manager.

My heart aches for you guys! If I were you I would email the USNA Medical Admissions office. You can ask them anything. My DS emailed the doctor a few times as he waited for a waiver as well. They emailed back very quickly (not on the weekend) and explained the process he was under. Here is their email: admissionsmedical@usna.edu

I hope you gets some answers. This process is so grueling but your kid will land where God wants him. You can even go as far to ask medical if the waiver your DS needed ever would have been given or is it something that never gets waived. You could be as blunt as "could you just tell us why you didn't grant it?"

My impression is that competition was so stiff this year and USNA's staff that handles waivers is so short-handed, that if you have a DQ and any reason for them not to mess with it, they are just sticking with the low-hanging fruit. I so empathize with you.

This isn’t correct. This years cycle is running similar to other years. How do you know waiver authorities are short staffed? BGO’s would have been advised how to address this with candidates, if it were true. And we have not.

If you are the candidate they want, and require a waiver, it will be sought, and granted if possible.

Thinking that choosing ‘low hanging fruit’ over others bc they are ‘easier’ is discrediting to apointees. Maybe I misunderstand your meaning.

This cycles is playing out like most. If any were hindered by DQ’s/medical/waivers, it would have been last year with the DODMERB crash. And last year was a completed Mission cycle. Also, competition is stiff every year.

It’s hard to grasp how a medical DQ, that doesn’t seem to be an issue presently, can be a non waiverable issue. But there is a reason. And reaching out to the waiver authority for clarification is the way to go, if you need further understanding.

This. From my emails with the WA at USNA, each medical DQ is different. How my DQ was handled with someone elses DQ, even if they were for the same condition, is treated vastly differently. If a waiver is possible, it'll definitely be evaluated. And each applicant is worth seeking a waiver for! (at least in my opinion) :thumb::thumb:

waiver denial is my biggest anxiety right now! I definitely feel for you and I hope you find your answers :( <3

I did not mean to discredit appointees at all!! What I meant by low-hanging fruit is that they are the cream of the crop, the best candidates with no or minor medical disqualifications complicating their appointments. As far as staffing, I have heard that from people in the know, but I have no personal knowledge. I could be wrong.

I agree with @justdoit19 . It’s my understanding that being medically cleared without needing a waiver doesn’t necessarily boost your chances over an applicant that needs a waiver (or multiple). At the end of the day, if the applicant requiring a waiver is wanted for an appointment, then the school/branch will go out of their way and try their best to grant them a waiver; if the condition(s) are in fact waiverable, and the applicant meets the criteria for being granted that waiver.

There are some conditions, that just aren’t waiverable for a branch, however benign they may seem. And there are also instances where the condition is waiverable, but the applicant’s specific case does not meet the parameters to receive a waiver for that condition. Not much a waiver authority can do about those situations

We’ve also seen a lot of cases where an applicant is granted a waiver but ultimately denied acceptance for other reasons (academics, CFA, essays, interviews, etc)
