(Rising senior)
Early Decision application
Provisional appointment to the class of 2028

Weighted GPA: 3.4
AP + IB classes (including senior year): 6 total
SAT (super-scored): 1200, working on a 1400 this next SAT date
Took model united nations (MUN) class
Participated in a debate club
Taking JROTC my senior year (they didn't offer it when I lived in England for 3 years)

3 years of varsity sports: Track + Cross Country
Gaining work experience
Starting to volunteer

Father graduated from VMI in 96'
Studied at an international school in London, England for first 3 years, of my high school (2 years in Belgium before high school)... I imagine this would boost my chances somewhat??

Going to interview with admissions within the next week or so, also showing up to an open house

Without seeing my personal essay, or knowing how well I will do at my interview, what are my odds of getting in? This is a dream school of mine and I've always wanted to go to VMI since I was little. I'm really stressing out about admissions so any help is appreciated.

You look like a strong candidate. Make sure you apply for the scholarships within the institute. Good luck and enjoy the ride. I loved visiting my son there and I miss it terribly. He's doing great and was well prepared for the outside world.

As you already know, your SAT needs improvement.
Let's say I am to boost it to around 1400. What do you think of my odds then? My father thinks I have a pretty good shot, but I'm worried the school has gotten more selective since he graduated...

Clearly your odds will be much better but no one ever knows. All you can do is your best, and apply!

I know this is hard to do, but don't worry about decisions that you have no control over. All you can do is put forth the best application that you can. THAT is what you should worry about. Prepare, study, and execute for the SAT's. Try for some leadership rolls in something. Then just apply with the best application you have, and wait and see what happens.

I think with higher SAT's your chances are good, but don't freak out about what you think they want. Just give it your best and see what happens

I have found some very useful information from the "common data set" that is published by each university. Simply google "common data set Virginia Military Institute". It provides all kinds of useful information such as admission rates, test scores, and GPA's of admitted students. I found VMI, for the entering class 2022, accepted 847 students out of 1192 applications (71%). Rigor of secondary school record, class rank, and GPA are considered "very important", while standardized test scores are only "considered". 16.8% of admitted students submitted SAT scores, and 5.6% submitted ACT scores. Of those scores submitted, the 50th percentile SAT score was 1190, while the 75th percentile was 1270. The average high school GPA was 3.67. There is much more information presented in the common data set, but these are just a few of the stats presented.

three things, get some good letters of recommendation, write a good essay, keep volunteering. Just got appointed 2 days ago via ED good luck!

Your chances are very good, especially with your provisional appointment.
Please let us know when you’re in!

I've always wondered if a provisional appointment actually held any weight in terms of actual acceptance later. All my kids got their provisional appointments when they were infants. I always thought of them as purely ceremonial.

As an infant? What is a "provisional appointment?"

Provisional Appointments are certificates issued to a young person legally related to a VMI alum upon the request of an alum. The certificate is signed by the director of admissions and states that the appointee is "issued a provisional appointment to enter Virginia Military Institute with the Class of (appointee's future class year)." The appointment is subject to the recipient meeting all requirements for admission and is a great way to get a young relative interested in the kind of future they could have at VMI.

Alumni can request one for family members and it's published in the Alumni Review.
