What can parents do after I-day

When the Bancroft doors closed behind our DD in '19, that was our signal that it was her time to soar and it was our time to get out of her way. I-Day was for her, not for us. That evening, we had a nice dinner and a great night's sleep - we were worn out!

We spent the next day in DC and capped it off with Friday Evening Parade at Marine Barracks 8th and I. In my opinion, that is the perfect way to wrap up the I-Day experience. I would like to get to Ft. McHenry on one of these visits.

DS has indicated that he'd be fine with us just putting him on a plane on Wednesday. He thinks he may have some clarity of focus without worrying about whether or not we're ok. He wants to stay locked in. We'll take queues from him and will land on the right answer. Bottom line is that it must be 100% about him. This is his journey, not ours. Yes, we'll have a Navy journey too, but ours is merely an adjacency. His is primary.

Go Navy!

Sorry if this question has been asked before but I'm wondering if parents could do anything interesting after I-day with their plebes.

My older DD went through Basic Cadet Training at USAFA 5 years ago which is the AF version of Plebe Summer. After I-day, parents can actually "stalk" their Basics(Cadets before finishing BCT) in the USAFA campus, see what the Basics are doing in BCT. It's quite an experience.

Can plebe parents do the same thing or there is nothing interesting to see after I-Day at USNA?

Thanks!

i know with my brother, my parents when they were in the area would go to the bleachers on dewey field and watch the plebes do the morning workout. I think the timing is around 5:45, at least during 21’s ps. you’re free to go find them with staying in the boundaries of public areas but that’s all mine did.

The typical Plebe/Cadet used to show up alone with no entourage. Great stories about meeting classmates at the airport or at the hotel the night before I-Day.

Go home - if they were an 18 year old enlisted Marine getting off the bus at Paris Island about to spend 13 weeks of intense training - Mommy and Daddy would not be there.

We had been in Annapolis for 3days before I-Day, (fairly common from what I could tell for fly-in Families). We just got on a plane headed west a few hours after the doors closed behind DD that day.

DD had been very active in regional/national competition in her sport; she wasn't around home a-lot and had little time to spare outside of team team and school commitments. I-Day hit us all a little unprepared. I remember DD standing in ranks waiting for Bancroft's Doors to open. As a group CL2020 looked pretty ragged. MD-DW was concerned a coupel of the smaller plebes were close to passing out.

At "attention" DD kept stealing last looks back at her mom and I. I could see love and gratitude in her eyes, (really); she was a pain in the arse to raise, but it was like in that moment she was suddenly in touch with how good 'Home' had been. There was a ton of sadness too, "I am going now, and you can't follow... I will be OK (I think)...... but you can't follow". She looked beautiful, sad, resolute, frightened, strong, mature and child-like all at the same time. And the procession began.

I remember all of I-Day like it was yesterday, and if I was shaken, DW was past sadness into full-on deep mourning by the time those doors closed. The idea of looking for something interesting to do with DW would have been like inviting Mrs. Lincoln out for drinks after the play.
I-Day was a powerful day for me; better than PPW, I wouldn't have missed it. That said, for us it was time to fly home.

Different DDs/DSs; different families; different experiences.

BTW? Is it even possible to "stalk" a plebe on I-Day? Aren't they all busy in Bancroft?

Heather, I have some projects that need attention around here................ if you r stuck for something to do.

Sigh, your description made me tear up. I will likely always miss not having had it in person, but it is what it is. Reading yours I can just swap out your kiddo for mine and it's like I was there in person.

And as soon as my work load lightens up (likely never at this rate) I can come dog sit for ya'!

Or as DS and pals would say, just back to the Class of 24.

Yes, my older DD flew to Colorado Springs with the other boy from our district before I-Day. She wasn't even old enough to accept her appointment on her own alone:p She was picked up by a volunteer and stayed a night in his house. He dropped her off to the ZOO I-day morning. He later became her sponsor dad.

I regret that I didn't go with her and missed a great moment, so I was thinking of doing something different this time.

My Plebe to be want her sister (AF 2LT) administer her personal swearing in. I heard good and bad (being stressed out because of the schedule) about this. Hopefully it's a good experience. I figure I could get some nice photos;) Should her sister be in service dress or mess dress for the personal oath?

Not all parents at I-Day are plebe parents, detailers have parents too.
Lol when my son was a detailer, he invited me to watch the parade. I didn’t volunteer to the other parents who my kid was. ;)

I suspect his plebes think differently of him now than when he was a detailer.

He started acting like a detailer to me to show me his style. I laughed, because I don’t care how tough he has become. He will never be able to take dad in a fight. :)

Yes! It will be a keepsake. My sons uncle and godfather, a Colonel in the USAF, retired, administered his Oath on the Chapel steps. It pops up every year in my memories, and takes me right back. What a day ♥️♥️

Please check with your P2B first, whatever he decides, be respectful of that
It was a very emotional time for me, going to look for my plebe the day after, potentially find her and not being able to talk to her or hug her it would had break my heart (and hers) but if that is fun for you then, once again, make sure you talk to your plebe about it and make sure he is ok with you watching

Don't know what the vacancy situation is in A-town for I-doc now - we made reservations at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites back in December, but now that DD is going to NAPS I just cancelled for June 28 -31 and same hotel for Parents Weekend Aug 9-12. Hopefully, this helps a family looking for accommodations for the CO 2027.

I always booked Historic Inns of Annapolis late. I have never had a problem finding a hotel.
