I've been tossing things in a box to send to my son after Indoc like headphones, camera, clock radio/cd player. However, I don't really know what he's allowed to have and can't really communicate with him to find out what he'd like to have me send from home. Can they have their MP3 player and/or their clock radio/cd player? Can we send their favorite music cds? Any advise would be greatly appreciated so I can get it in the mail.

    Goodies

Also, can we send them goodies like jerky, cookies, etc for delivery on Monday without sending enough for 61 PCs?

What about UPS. Can they receive UPS or FedEx packages? Would the address be the same?

Wait until they give you their box number to send packages. It will get to them a whole lot sooner. I always use USPS but have also had things sent UPS and it worked fine. Keep in mind they must run everywhere unless in a group, so keep boxes runner-friendly! All mail is picked up at the mail center.
Things I recall being asked to send: Duct tape, Pledge, homemade cookies, Brownies, gatorade powder, granola bars, Tide pens, shout wipes, starch and a watch. After parent weekend you will have a clearer idea of what they want and need as well. I remember part of that first liberty was shopping AFTER of course a steak dinner, well earned!
You don't have to send enough treats to share anymore, but it's a nice way to make friends! :thumb:

    what to send after indoc

Before ours went to INDOC we talked with a midshipman from our state. They will not have access to their musical creature comforts such as MP3 players, head phones, clock radios until they've worked together as a class. Cell phones are distributed and taken back after calls are made. These are all privileges which have to be earned.to be able to have back aforement items for "keeps" Now, if I remember correctly, these privileges must be gained by the WHOLE class, not per company. PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG!!

You are correct. Recognition is another rite of passage. It will be later in the year. Until then lots of restrictions are in place. Be sure to WAIT to be asked for items, they know what they need and what is permited.

SOoo are you telling me the key to their success and happiness is working together as a class? Too easy!!

Maybe we should just frequently remind them of this simple truth... so they can remind each other.

Although it is a long way off. Here is a typical list of what a class has to accomplish in order to be recognized as 4th classmen. This is usually accomplished sometime in Spring.

    For the class of 2011
    1. Pass ten PKTs with a 90% collective average. Each PKT is to consist of 10 questions from the appropriate section of the Bearing’s Book.

    2. The class must honor and pay tribute to the 142 to the RC/RTO/RTOA’s approval.

    3. The class must honor the victims of 9/11 to the RC/RTO/RTOA’s approval.

    4. The class must spend three Saturdays performing three community service projects approved by the RTOA – this need not be done all on one Saturday. (ie. Henry Viscardi School, Soup Kitchens, Cleaning Great Neck Train Station)

    5. The class must march a drill card to the RTO/RDCO/RTOA’s approval. Each company will compete against the rest.

    6. The class must pay tribute to the armed services by singing each service’s hymn at lunch from memory.

    7. The class must shine the War Memorial Bell and Reg Row Binnacle to the RTOA’s approval.

    8. Each company will paint a merchant marine related mural approved by the RTO/RTOA.

    9. The class must give five presentations on historical leaders with focus on each leadership style (RTO/RTOA to give first presentation as example).

    10. The class must present a historical story of the seven cadets who earned the Merchant Marine’s Distinguished Service Medal.

    11. The class must obtain a letter from the Superintendent stating that the plebe class has performed well and are deserving of recognition.

    12. The class must draw the 1/c ring on Barney Square the Thursday night before Ring Dance.

    13. Attend five Leadership Reaction Courses as designed by the RTO/RTOA to instill critical thinking, teamwork, and character development.

    14. The class must pass three surprise, objective uniform inspections with a class average of 90%. The purpose of this is to create in the class a habit
of always maintaining a clean and professional uniform.

    15. Each company must hold 10 debates, during tattoos, on current events/legislation, to encourage critical thinking and discussion.

    - Spirit missions are to be done with the RTO/RTOA’s knowledge and explicit approval (in writing) and 85% of the class is to participate.

    - The following are items that the class must complete their plebe year but do not count as recognition steps:
    o Design class shirt
    o Design class ring
o The class must support all athletic teams and have each team captain sign off when they are satisfied with the class’s performance. All home events against USCGA must be attended.
o The class must return to their school and take part in the visitation program or work in Admissions by Christmas Break.

I've seen this before! Thanks for putting it out there for all to see. Yes, Plebe year is a teamwork year besides academics. Yes, we need to make sure we've told our PCs to work together if we already haven't. It's up to them to remember and remember they must, or else it will be a long plebe year. From the young men and women I met July8th, I'm certain 2013 has fine, honorable hard/smart working who have the potential of accomplishing Recognition sooner than most if they "just do it" (Like the Nike' saying).

    Knowing it in your head,
and LIVING it in your heart
    are two completely different things.

    Best of luck to them.

Don't send music, headphones, movies, candy (not allowed). Again, send only NCAA approved treats such as power bars, gatorade, etc. as these items are allowed. Don't even tempt your son by sending them other stuff...it most likely would just get him in trouble.

He can have an alarm clock now, not one with a radio though. Best kind is the atomic clocks as the time is always correct.

I know that for a while last year our daughter had to open all of her boxes in front of the company training officer. Contraband like candy was held and rationed out to her. She says plebe candidates aren't allowed to have cookies. If they are Mom's, homemade cookies, the PC will have to share. No need to send huge quantities, but don't expect your PC to get more than a couple of the cookies. On the plus side, Cookie Cafe will start up fairly quickly. Everyone looks forward to Thursday afternoons! :shake:
