I just received an email saying that I was not offered a spot at SLE. Although I am a bit sad, I know that most cadets do not attend SLE. What, then, would be my next step to take? I am already training for the CFA, and I was selected to attend Boys State this summer. My grades are good, I have a 4.2 GPA, etc. I have a 32 on my ACT, and I am planning to take it again to try and improve my score. Any advice is appreciated.

The full kit should open sometime in June. Once it opens, you can start chipping away at the requirements. In the meantime, you should talk to your English, Math, Science, and PE teachers (if I recall correctly from my ds#1's app) about filling out the SOEs when them become available. They are more of a questionnaire instead of a traditional LOR. Also, you can check if your nomination apps have opened. 2 of 3 are open in our area and DS#2 has A LOT of essays to write.

Your resume looks solid. Maybe retake the ACT and try to get a 33 or higher (what you have now is good but one more point isn't too hard and can help). Work on leadership, do you participate in sports or scouting? Maybe get a part time job this summer. You look like you're doing everything right. I'd still take time this summer to check out other SMC and work on your ROTC scholarship packages. A solid plan B is always a good idea.

Yeah I wouldn't worry about SLE. My brother was rejected by the summer experiences at USAFA, USNA, and USMA. He was sad, but the next year he got appointments to all three. Keep fit, keep studying, spend some time studying how to interview well. Your chances are good.

Let it go! SLE does not matter. Finish the academic year strong.
Get contact information for Math, Physics or Chem, and English teachers--get their SUMMER email address and discuss their ability to support your application between now and late August.
Also, talk to your student counseling office and registrar's office-and get information for contact during the summer so they can share your transcript and school overview.

Your full application will open in late June/July...and you can work on your full application over the summer while also working on your submissions for nominations to your Senators and Congressman.

DS didn't get into SLE and got an appt to West Point this year. As stated above, SLE has ZERO to do with getting in. One thing I would suggest as well is to find time to do community service this summer. Volunteering always looks good on the application.

DS didn't get into SLE either. and is currently CO 25. He continued to take the SAT (a total of 4 times) and improved every time he took it. Boys State always looks good on the app. Keep the grades up, volunteer. and continue to prep for the CFA. Good Luck!!!!

Both of my kids did not get into the summer seminars at USAFA, USMA, and USCGA. Both received multiple appointments, graduated from their respective academies, and are now pilots. I always tell them that they have the best entry level jobs out there.

I think this is spot on. Find some community service activity, maybe with a leadership roll. Start a food drive, start a group to clean a park, etc... Not getting SLE could be viewed as a blessing. Saves time for what you can be working on to improve your WCS. Highly recommend getting counseling/coaching for interviewing techniques. Most candidates underestimate the importance of the interviews with congressional committees and Academy Admissions. And even how you sound in a phone conversation. Try to talk with some people with Military backgrounds, (especially Any Academy grads you can find), and straight up ask them what they think an interviewer would like to hear. Good to see you're on here asking for guidance. That's the sign of a good leader in the making!
Good Luck!
