Our DS reported a week before school for a NROTC Orientation week where they had a mini "boot camp" learning military customs, courtesy, drill (Marching), physical training, had uniforms issued, did an initial PFT, etc. Parents did not stay but there was a picnic at the conclusion for families and some came back for it. It served as a culmination and "graduation" but I wouldn't go out of my way to make it if distance were an issue. Of course, every ROTC unit does things differently so it will be school dependent.
