I am currently a Junior HS class of 2017. 2021 Hopeful. I was wondering when would be a good time to begin applying for nominations? I have already applied and been accepted to SLE. I am sort of wondering what the next step is. Thanks

My personal opinion - do it over the summer. It's likely that your members of congress (2 senators and 1 rep) won't open their applications for Class of 2021 nominations until late April or into May. Their websites may not even yet be updated to reflect 2021 dates for application. The application deadline will typically be sometime late September or into October. You can call or email his service academy coordinator. They are usually very nice and helpful.

One thing you can work on now is figuring out who you are going to ask to write you letters of recommendation for the nomination applications. You can talk to them now and tell them that you will be applying to a service academy and when you will likely need those letters. You can later provide each of them with a sheet of paper with each MOC's name and address. They can then use this to prepare the same letter to each of the different MOC's.

Just to jump on Sledges coat tales. Check out USMA.edu for time line suggestions and the stickies above that are excellent that buff81 has graciously provided. Some of the advantages of SLE is you will be able to open and start your file a little bit earlier and your CFA will count. Your have an opportunity for an interview for what ever its worth. I would contact your teaches for math, science and english about your desires to attend USMA and ask them if they would be willing to write a paragraph or two when that time comes for your application. Again, work on getting those ACT/SAT test scores as high as possible.

Good luck keep us posted and ask all the question you can here

Thank you. I have taken my SAT and scored 2260 (770M, 740CR, 750W). Is a written letter required from my math, english, and science teachers?

Check your MoC's websites. If their directions are up, you can start gathering what you need (it's almost as tedious as the academy application). However, let them get through this admission cycle before you start submitting...that means get past Rday for c/o 2020. In the summer, they are busy w/ send offs, meet and greets, etc. Your turn is soon!

My MoC's would not even begin to accept applications until August 1st. You could begin preparing them starting in the spring, but they will not consider them until the fall. So at the end of summer after you have completed your trips and projects and community services, put all of those in your apps as well.

All the advice above is right on. One additional thing you can do is start putting together your resume. At this point it could just be a list of accomplishments and activities. Categories could be Academics, honors, athletics, leadership, EAs, and community service. If you start it early you can continue to add to it as you remember things that you did. All three of my DS MOCs required a resume. And even if it is not required the list will help with filling out civilian college and SA applications.

Assembling a resume will help you realize just how far you have grown in such a short time. This will help keep your momentum as well as finding areas to improve on.

Yes, part of your file, you will be asked for teacher recommendations. You will submit their name and email address, your teachers will receive an email from admissions to submit an evaluation within a time frame. You will never see the submitted evaluation, but it doesn't hurt to get in their good graces. haha.

Thanks Tug...but the book doesn't cover applying...it just gets you out the door once you have a BFE.
