I'm almost 16 and entering 10th grade this year. I'm very interested in trying to apply to USAFA. I am in the process of working to be able to solo by the end of the year and have found my ALO (have not contacted yet, but currently writing an email). There is a open house thing for interested students in the end of August, is that something I should go to or should I wait for next year? What do I do next in the process to try to get in? My family doesn't know much about the military, my grandfather go accepted to West Point, but that was in the 50's. I haven't had anyone from my school go to a military academy in over a decade. I'm not really sure where I'm supposed to go from here.

    Early stages advice:
Read every drop down, every link, in USAFA Admissions site. Take notes. Build timeline.

Read about types of nominations. Research your Senators' and Members of Congress' websites for Service Academy nomination process. Take notes. Build timeline.

Research Air Force officer careers available out of USAFA and AFROTC. Be sure you can see yourself doing those things. USAFA is a way station to that time in service.

Research AFROTC and do your best to understand the differences between that path and USAFA. You may fit better at one place than another.

Read up on other Service officer communities/Academies, and ensure you don't see anything there you want to consider.

    Work with primary sources first.

Read the Stickies at the top of various forums here, especially Nominations and Acronyms.

Search "Chance Me" and "Stats" threads here, so you can get an idea of what your competition brings to the table.

Good for you to start gathering knowledge now. This is a big decision and a challenging path.

Thank you for the help. I was really going into this pretty blind. I've read the whole admissions page, but there is just so much on it that it gets a bit confusing!

If you have questions, contact your local ALO. I contacted my local Blue and Gold Officer when I was going into 10th grade and he was ecstatic that I was so interested, I am sure the same will go with your ALO.
