I wonder how many parents who look at USMMA as their kids plan B Academy don't realize the windfall their kids are about to recieve by going to KP. If you don't understand what I mean go look up what an Ensign/2ndLt salary compared to what a 3rd Mate/3rd Engineer salary and what your career choices are after graduation. You think that dude who spent 4 years at the Air Force Academy and now babysitting ballistic missile silos in the middle of nowhere middle america saw himself doing that as a doolie?

And if you decide you want to commission you can in any branch out of KP. It was my son's plan c, and he got into his a & b. But the more he learned about KP during his senior year in high school, it became his plan a. He couldn't be happier. He has a F-18 flight internship in June and then he's off to work with the Army Corps of Engineers.

Yup! I did the active duty gig out the gate but after 5 yrs I decided I wanted the big payday. Damn the Submarines! We're the Men of the Merchant Marine!!

Same here. My DS is not the least bit bothered with his TD from USNA and USAFA since he looked up USMMA opportunities. He is also very excited about the smaller class size. He comes from a school where his graduating class is 2000 strong!

One of the academy forums we went to last year, the rep from USMMA said Merchant Marine academy is the best kept secret of all the academies. And she was right!

My son had originally wanted to go active-duty Navy after graduating KP but after his learning about the opportunities sailing commercially, he changed his mind. Since graduating last year, he has been at sea working on a few ships as a 3rd engineer and is very happy with his career choice. Good luck to everyone in the incoming class of 2028!

For years my son has wanted to attend USNA. After receiving an offer of appointment to both, he has chosen USMMA over USNA. We didn't know much about USMMA a year ago, but dug in and did quite a bit of research, visited with graduates and took a campus visit. It really is a hidden gem and gives kids options to explore over their 4 years there.

It went from being my son’s 1B to 1A after his official overnight visit. He knew without a shadow of a doubt it’s where he wanted to be. He still gets to serve his country, but has vastly more opportunities at KP than he would’ve elsewhere.

My younger son is planning on applying in 2 years.
