As DS has all the addresses for F&F on his phone, I assume he can bring an address book with him. As the care packages may take a while to get to them, is it better to send some stamped envelopes and note cards on I-Day?

Yes. Saves them time. Search the forums here some people have also created forms etc for plebes to fill out. That way they don’t have to think as much.

I made some note cards for him as well as some to share with others.

Care package included sheet of preprinted labels, cards and stamps (and roll up fruit snacks - they can eat in their rack without making a mess)

Just be aware that some Plebes will write often when they have a chance and some will not write at all. However last summer, DS said his company made them all send at least one letter out during PS. They will also be given a small supply of paper and envelopes.

Lessons for those who send letters to Plebes during PS:
  • Be sure to include the Company Number otherwise it will be returned to sender as undeliverable. This process will take weeks.
  • Once you get within a week of PS ending, you take a risk that they start using their PO box and the mailroom will return the letter to sender
Both of these happened to me. DW and DS still make fun of me for these fails.

One good idea, we used, was to have everyone at my daughter's graduation party write her a note of encouragement. I sent them individually throughout plebe summer and my daughter said getting mail every single day was a life saver. She said it kept her going:) The care packages were great, but a simple letter from home everyday was golden!

They can have the best intentions but if you don't hear from them - don't panic! We send at least the first 10 letters with a check off form and return stamped/addressed envelope. We received 1 letter the entire summer that he hand addressed! It was just because he was busy or exhausted...he was good on the calls home and when we saw him parent weekend he said he just didn't have the time or energy but loved reading our letters and getting mail. With that being said one of his plebe friends - actually there with him plebe summer sent him a letter at the academy simply because she liked to write - so some write and some don't. Just try not to worry if you don't hear much.

This worked well for DD back in 2015:

When we learned DD mailing address for PS, which I think was just before we left for IDay, we sent of a manila envelope to friends and team mates DD said she'd like to hear from during PS.

Inside was a short note explaining that: DD was going to be stressed/tested during Plebe summer; that she wouldn't have a phone/email/text available to her; and that the recipient was someone important to DD that she'd love to hear from over the summer. We also included 3 stamped envelopes with DD's plebe summer address on each.

I think we sprung for postage on 3O envelopes. DD didn't count her mail, but said she got around 20 much appreciated notes from her friends this way. I doubt she would have gotten 5 letters if her e-mail/texting friends had to address and stamp an envelope.

Best to all Plebe-to-be parents.

Also, be aware that there my well be delays in the notes from DS and DD getting put in the mail to be delivered and the occasional USPS delay. We just got one of DS's letters from Beast at West Point last week--9 months from the date of his letter.

Best to you and your plebe!

We sent some pictures of home life and the doggie to our plebe. he is not a writer and didn't utilize the many self addressed stamped envelopes that we sent him. DS also has handwriting like chicken scratch so it was difficult to decipher the one letter we got because they made him write it!

Wow was the note hand delivered on the back of a tortoise? Sounds like it got lost and traveled the world a couple times before reaching you XD

The longest letters we got from DS where from the 3 days he spent in SIQ due to the Plebe hack.
