Last weekend marked the 100th Anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and started the countdown to the centennial of the start of the "War to End All Wars". It didn't end all wars but it was one of the most horrific events of all time- with the better part of a generation of Frenchmen, Englishmen, Germans and Russians killed or maimed in 4 years of truly senseless battles, and ended Europe's position as the "leaders" of the civilized world.

The BBC has a great web site on the subject- a subject which far too few know much about. Check it out - http://www.bbc.co.uk/ww1

Yes a horrific event but the flu epidemic killed more than those in WWI.
