Yay!

    My son applied to the USMMA, received a Congressional Nomination, and was being considered for the NMMI Prep Slot (his ACT/SAT were a teensy bit lower than needed for direct entry).

    We've been sitting on the edge of our seat! We WANTED for him to do the Prep Slot because we felt like it would really ready him for the academic challenges he'll see at the USMMA. And it's such an honor, even without direct entry.

    Guess what! Tonight the contact at the Congressmans Office called to tell my son that he was getting the NMMI Prep Slot into the USMMA! We're elated! He said we'll receive our letter in the mail from the USMMA real soon.

    So excited, I can't even sleep. To think... A few months ago there was a Talent Search Counselor (they go around to all of the high schools and help the kids apply for schools, scholarships, etc) who asked my son where he was applying to school. My son told her the USMMA. She immediately called me (at work, because it was so urgent) and told me that she was concerned that my son was aiming for something "out of his league" and that he should definitely have more "realistic and obtainable options". We were so disheartened when she said that, but we kept trying and didn't give up. He kept at it, and now look!

    He's an outstanding kid, and I don't just say that because I am partial. He's really someone special, and I'm excited about his future!

    Now I need to plan a trip to the NMMI and the the USMMA. :biggrin:

    Congratulations!

    How AWESOME for you and your son! Congrats! What a great lesson for your son....never give up and never let anyone tell you what you can or cannot accomplish! YAY!!!!!:biggrin:

    I have a stupid question about the prep school. Is that funded by the Academy or at least MARAD, or is tuition charged. Way back in the day, when I was going through the process, USNA suggested that I go to the Prep School (not sure if it was in New Mexico at the time or not). I didn't go that route since I did get into KP.

    Congratulations to your son for his perseverance and spirit in reaching this milestone and accomplishment. From everything I've seen NMMI will indeed make him better prepared to succeed once he gets to USMMA. In situations like this I believe the below quote is apt and at some challenging times in my life I've found it a useful thought, and when you are "reaching" who doesn't encounter challenges:

    Good luck, it would seem another good statement is probably the USMMA Motto: Acta Non Verba.

    First of all, congrats on your wonderful news!!!

    I quoted the part of your message that struck me. grrrrrr...... we too have been looked at like, "what?!!!" when ds tell's his military aspirations and goals. he applied to the top science/math boarding school and got in last school year and MOST of his HS teachers, including the counselor were very negative towards this!!! along with his aspirations for service academy. they basically told us it was impossible.:mad:

    what is wrong with *some* of our educators today? kids need to dream big and reach to meet those aspirations!!! big dreams are GOOD, people!!! not everybody wants to just stay in mediocrity because its easier.

    I can totally relate to how you were feeling...

    cmakin I believe if you receive a nomination to NMMI the government will pay half of the tuition approximately $7,000 for the year! :thumb:

    NMMI

    My daughter went to NMMI as a SELF PREP not sponsored by any Academy.
    We found it to be the BEST decision that she made in her journey to a Service Academy. It was there that she learned about the USMMA which became the 2nd BEST decision. she made!!!

    The PREP Dept there will do everything and more to make the transition to Academy Life possible. My daughter went to the Academy 2 years older and an Associates Degree in Math and Science with High Honors. It DEFINITELY was an advantage all 4 years at USMMA.

    Congratulations to your son. You are going on the 'ride of your lives' also. I enjoyed every second....

    I just want to say congratulations. This is so good to hear, because even though people haven't told me that, that is the feeling I have been getting from some people. I hope in about 2.5 years my mom is writing something like this. Congratulations again!!!
