USNA Class of 2028 Waiting and Speculating

Yes, it’s definately a big factor. However in the case of Annapolis (at least) the WCS is an add/subtract calculation. Perfect scores are only going to carry you so far if you have negatives in other areas. If it carried that much weight, you wouldn’t have direct entries that didn’t even crack 1200. They would have never been able to overcome the deficit in their standardized testing scores.
What If their slate wasn’t competitive?

You are making assumptions that aren’t necessarily true.

Exactly! We can never know the slate. But i did wonder about the Top 150. Maybe somewhere there was lacking of something which made USNA give a TD.

Anyone from NJ still pending? I haven't seen many New Jerseyans posting. I've counted all appointments in all academies, and there probably less than 10 for all SA combined. We are from District 08. Good luck to us all that are still pending. 🙌🙌

I think PA-02 & PA-04 (Philadelphia & Philadelphia suburbs) have at least 1 per congressional district so far, you'd have to bounce that off of the list on the other thread.
I’m pa-02, ik 1 kid with an appointment to Navy and Army and I got one to Air Force. I’m still waiting for Army and Navy tho

Definitely true, but as an anecdotal example, I'm from a slate in rural Texas where only 3 other people applied. I have a 1570 SAT, 3.8 GPA, and am certainly well rounded. I also was invited to the North Texas USNA Alumni Blue Chip Dinner- which meant my Admissions Officer invited me. Yet someone else won my slate and I'm still pending- I think I'll be getting a waitlist.

I know SAT isn't everything, but seeing all the 1500+ SAT candidates get rejected while also not missing anything essential other candidates have gives me the feeling that maybe the admissions board gets some sort of schadenfreude out of rejecting academically excellent candidates. I don't feel I'm entitled to an appointment or anything, and I'll be glad to go to USAFA, but it's made me wonder whether the USNA values what I have to offer, perhaps the Air Force values academics more.

This is not an assumption. It’s based upon past and current candidates we know. Annapolis grads and candidates grow on trees here. We are at least in the top 5 when it comes to competitive districts, probably top 3, and plenty of Mids on the yard from this area didn’t necessarily have the strongest scores and GPA’s

Do you know the 1200 candidate’s competition? Did they beat out 1600 valedictorians that weren’t well rounded?

Thanks for sharing! I think most folks are scratching their heads when they read such stellar candidates were given outright TD. But we dont know what went into play for those decisions.

Make that a 3rd Minnesotan still pending and probably more beyond us
I know there is one that was accepted on the self-updating list a while back and one that was turned down to my knowledge, but I am sure there are many others that we have not heard from. Either way we just have to hold tight until we get a definitive answer one way or another! Goodluck

Y’all are forgetting intangibles:

Essays
Interviews
How they interview
What the SAY in the interview
Diversity
Geo representation
Etc….

Or how others on the slate presented their intangibles.

It’s NOT the most academically qualified that gets the appointment.

And even if you did know the ‘intangibles’, you don’t know what USNA is looking for in a person as far as being able to form them into a future officer.

Every year there are head scratchers. But one simply cannot assume to know why Jimmy was and julie wasn’t appointed.

Will offers for Top 150 be sent out before April 15 as well?
Yes, and really, "Top 150" is just a part of the non-slate winners. The category is "Additional Appointees".
The 150 is just the number that is REQUIRED to be top WCS/WPM. At this time, there is legislation (discussed in another thread)
to change that number to 200 but that is not an increase in bodies within the class, just a redirection to the Academies on how
they allocate the Additional Appointees.

Agree! You can also get beaten by someone with lower academic score if they were given the principal nom.

Since you are looking into a career in the Naval Service, might be good to consider the below. It's the Naval Academies' directive from the Secretary of the Navy on admissions:
1. Excellent Moral Character
2. Mentally and Physically Fit
3. Interested in becoming a professional officer in the Naval Service.
4. Potential for Leadership
5. Likely to complete a 4 year course of study.
6. Likely to remain in the Naval Service beyond initial obligation.

They are also instructed to encourage qualified candidates:
1. From traditionally under-represented populations in the officer corps to include African-Americans, Hispanic or Latino, Native Americans, Rural Americans, and Women.
2. From Navy and Marine Corps enlisted ranks.
3. With strong STEM interests.
4. From foreign countries.

Notice anything here? They don't talk about academics until bullet point #5. This is N*ot college unlike most institutions where your GPA and SAT (for the most part) make or break you (especially with your top-tier institutions). From my perspective your academic record is to show that you are capable of being successful at #5 along with the multitude of additional responsibilities you will have at Annapolis. Are there some super-duper smart Mids at Annapolis with the gigantor SAT scores and GPA's? Of course, but from my view they didn't get in solely on that, it just so happened that they checked all of the other boxes as well. Don't make the mistake of taking this personally, as that is not a good perspective if you are looking to be in the active-duty military.

How do we know the notification date of April 15th is factual? Seems crazy Saturday. Sunday and a holiday?

No one from our area in VA is out of the pending status yet. My DD’s high school typically has 3-4 kids go to USNA. This year there are 4 who have applied and they are all still pending. She is friends with others in our area with crazy stats and every one of them is pending. We are ok as long as everyone else in our area is stilling pending but wow this is unsettling

Do you know the 1200 candidate’s competition? Did they beat out 1600 valedictorians that weren’t well rounded?
Approximately 1,200 admitted per year. Of those approximately 200 are NAPS and about 20 are directly from the Fleet or Corps. And the internationals, approx 15. So, 1,200-235 = 965 slots competed for?
