USNA Class of 2028 Waiting and Speculating

I was turned down by both the Military Academy and Air Force Academy, but I stayed hopeful for USNA. I received a call from my congressman earlier today informing me of an offer of an appointment!! Go Navy! Beat Army!
Congratulations 🎉 Did your portal change before the call?

It would be a fallacy to assume the students with great academics don’t have other things outside of academics like leadership, extracurriculars, etc.

They may or may not. Some may have excellent qualities outside of academics.

It’s true you aren’t comparing just academics. You are comparing total whole person scores.
This is an excellent point, and one reason I threw out the possibility of yield being a factor for some. Schools want to know you want them as much as they want you. I doubt the academies are much different. On a competitive (unranked) slate they just need you to get the nomination, and then they can decide from there. With so few slots available, would they extend an offer to a kid who may go elsewhere when they know there's another kid on the slate who made if very clear they want to be at USNA? No idea. I wouldn't think this would be a factor, except that DS was asked in every interview 1) where he was applying and 2) what were his top choices. I remember one one zoom interview he was asked to rank his top 3, and he didn't mention the school where he was being interviewed. I happened to be in the next room, heard his response and almost fell out, lol! He didn't see the point of being dishonest. And I don't know if this is the case for everyone, but the panel members for his Congressional interview were his Area BGO, his Area FFR and a Congressional staff member. And, again, he was asked. In retrospect he should have taken A1Janitor's son's approach and just applied to his top choice (or top 2). Would have saved him a lot of time and effort, but he was not as confident as your son! Lucky for him he was accepted at his top 2.

The shock, sadness, and disappointment are all valid and I think it’s perfectly normal to vent.

I think the frustration comes from the seemingly randomness of appointments offered. When you look at the stats of those getting TDs, it’s hard to imagine that those receiving appointments had better or more stats. In fact I know lots of kids who got appointments with subpar stats. While we don’t see what admissions sees, I think this is where a lot of the disappointment comes from. I know it’s not random, but from this side, it often can appear so.

Each candidate (college applicant in a broader sense) has his/her own story/profile. It is in eyes of beholder(AO). DS has classmates whose research already led publications, some classmates play violin/piano like pro (of course, with expansive private lessons), some have spent years in debate training and won big national/international champions. The first time I learned boys(girls) nation/boys (girls) state, sea cadet etc that might help for SA application from this forum. Way too late for us !

We have none of these except DS has been working for two jobs since age of 15. A typical day of his -- 5:00AM -- 7:00AM swimming training, 8:00AM t0 4:00PM school (including commuting on school bus), then lifeguard shift after school and weekends. It is the best job for him because he can do a lot homework when he is on rotation off from the high chair.

He is what he is -- and West Point likes his profile
This is impressive. Is he planning on swimming at WP?

Not necessarily. I really want to attend a service academy and did everything I could think of to reach that goal, including stuff I would rather have not done in high school. Despite that, I got turned down and will most likely not reapply next year. This is not because I "didn't want it bad enough". It's because my goal is military service, not an academy. No matter how bad I may have wanted it ultimately USNA is a means to an end, and shouldn't (in my opinion) be viewed as an end in and of itself. I have an option to be commissioned into the Marine Corps as a 2LT in four years, why should I add a fifth just to attend a specific school?
Wishing you all the best next year and upon commissioning! My two recent graduate kids have shared with me that during their time at USNA they encountered people for whom attending USNA was an end in itself, admitting as much, and this negatively impacted their experience upon commissioning.

Many congratulations 🎉!

Please stay safe now for the once in a lifetime event: I-Day.

Participation in a Congressional interview of one of "their own" candidates is absolutely not allowed by USNA Admissions for BGOs. Actually, a BGO participating AT ALL on the nomination side is supposed to get approval from their Area Coordinator and are told in no uncertain terms that they may NOT participate in interviewing someone for the MOC that they already interviewed or will interview as a BGO.

Misused possessive pronoun. The Area BGO participated, not 'his.' Of course he doesn't have his own personal Area BGO. Same for the FFR.

If you mean "Area Coordinator" for the Lead BGO for a state or part of a state and the equivalent for FFRs then its all good.

By the way, the area that I'm in has 60 or so BGOs and my congressional district has well over a dozen.

Correct. It's my understanding the Area BGO and FFR for our area are the lead for our Congressional district.

Can you elaborate on the role of an area coordinator if you know anything? I talked to my BGO recently and he stated that he would contact the area coordinator about my questions but has not gotten back to me.

The Area Coordinator is the leader of BGOs within a state or part of a state. They too are volunteers and are the link
between BGOs and Admissions for things (probably) like the question that you asked the BGO. Admissions does not want
thousands of BGOs calling in with questions and direct the BGOs to go through the ACs in hope that the ACs might have an answer
for them. ACs also assign BGOs to specific schools and do other things like if a candidate needs a different BGO due to conflict
of interest or other thing. In my area, a reapplying candidate will be assigned to a different BGO from their first application and
the AC makes that assignment. The ACs also coordinate which BGOs go to events like college fairs or MOC Academy days.
