Is it required to have a BGO or is it just a way of helping a candidate get an appointment? Where I live (in the Philippines) there are no BGOs that i know of, will this hurt me in the application process?

Our BGO had no influence at all in obtaining a nomination. At least in our situation (we are in NJ), he was there to answer questions and provide guidance, but had no influence on a nomination or appointment.

Hope this help - best of luck

Part of the application process for USNA is a BGO interview, which I'm sure factors into the appointment. I would think Admissions would assign someone to you, even if the interview was done long distance.

To Hopeful From Manila:

Here is a link to international applicants that might be able to send you down the right path. I am not sure if you are a US Citizen living abroad or considered as a foreign national. Either way the USNA has definite procedures for each.

s/he may have no influence on obtaining a nom, but they do have to interview and fill out a form before a candidates package is complete for appointment, and certainly this interview can have a bearing on an appointment.
From what I understand, everyone should be assigned a BGO, but if they are geographically separated, you should be able to complete the required interview over the phone.
