Our DS is currently working on plan D, attending Univ. and enrolled crosstown in AROTC. He sent an application to the battalion in July, followed up and was told he was good to go. Has been participating fully with the battalion (pt, classes, color guard and two weekend field exercises so far) and loving it. He was informed that there are two campus based scholarships that 5 MSI's would be competing for. Filled out the necessary application and submitted it. He reported for pt on the day that the board would meet only to be told that his paperwork was not in order, and that he could not particpate with the battalion other than attending class until it was rectified. He was also told that since his paperwork was not in order he would not be considered for this current scholarship board. Three of the other cadets received the same notice. Our DS is certain that this is the first he has heard of any paperwork glitches as they apply to his participation. Anyone else think this is weird? 2 scholarships available, and the day the board meets three of these cadets who apply are told their paperwork is out of order?

Ouch. It certainly seems odd on the surface. What paper work wasn't in order? Was it the same for all three? At some level it never seems right to me that a cadet should suffer because of someone else's screw-up. However, it may be a case of being his responsibility to make sure all was in order.

Last spring my DS (says) he wasn't informed of the due date for sideload scholarship applications. Only given a general deadline. He submitted it a day after the official deadline, being unaware of it, and therefore the application was not sent up the line and we lost that particular chance at a sideload scholarship. All I could tell him is it was HIS responsibility to make certain he knew the due date and had the application completed on time. Hurt like hell for both of us but sometimes that's the way it is. Don't know if this is the case for your DS but you need to keep in mind that it may be. If they are going to be an officer they need to start taking responsibility now. They aren't going to hold his hand. However, if it was the cadre's responsibility to make sure the paper work was in order then you have a legit complaint.

On the plus side, at least in my son's case, I can assure you that mistake will never happen again. Note that my tag line refers to THIS semester.

Hope all works out in the end.

We're well aware that our DS has not always lived in the "details." However, he was in touch with the leadership of the battalion in July, and then again when classes began in August and was assured both times that he was good to go. He has reviewed all three of his e-mail accounts, his personal, the one with the university, and the one with the university assoc. with the battalion and can find no notice that he was not in order. I guess the most confusing aspect is that his participation has been uninterupted until this point. I'm not sure what the details for the other cadets are, as of this morning he is hoping to make an appointment with the appropriate rep. from the battalion tomorrow (his earliest availability). A lesson learned.

Meeting with someone from the battalion is the right approach, in my unknowledgable opinion anyway. I guess it depends on what paperwork wasn't in order. If it was his original application to participate as a College Programmer then that would be on them (IMO). If it's something else I expect he'll be told that it was his responsibility to make sure the paperwork was in order, and not theirs. I really do hope things will break your way as your son has worked hard for his chance at this. I expect there will be some interesting conversations with your DS subsequent to the meeting, regardless of what he's told. I'd be interested in hearing what the outcome is if your OK with that when the time comes.

Good luck nofodad! :thumb:

Paperwork

After a 6-7 e-mail volley DS received this message, "cadet, it appears your paperwork is in order after all." Oh, and still in the running for campus-based scholarship.

Whew! But it's not right that you should lose years off your life for that!
Glad everything turned out OK. Hope he gets the scholarship! :thumb:
