My son graduates and commissions this May from AFROTC. But he has the year long wait until he reports to Intel School. Does anyone know how or if Tricare works during that period? If I'm still declaring him as a dependent, does he stay covered? Thanks for the help.

Until his entry into Active Duty, he will not have AD Tricare. He will stay covered on yours as long as he is 26 or under, per the ACA.

But we'd have to pay more, correct? I thought he was dropped automatically if he was out of college.

HE wants to earn some money to pack away and also to enjoy the time. He nor us have the funds for Grad School too. :)

Yes — once he graduates you have to buy an additional TRICARE policy for your dependent ... however... from an older post ...

He does have TRICARE coverage on his own once he graduates and commissions, prior to reporting for AD. It is known as TRICARE 708. Basically he can use his orders and CAC card to access healthcare for himself

Great - so he'll have his own coverage. That'll save us money. I'm guessing he'll have to fill some form of paperwork for this.
Thanks to all above for the help.

Tricare went through a major restructuring last year, and I see no mention of the Tricare 708 plan anywhere other than here and on Reddit. All posts are before the Tricare restructuring.

Tricare offers Tricare Young Adult for 23+ adults, and of course he will be eligible for Tricare Prime at this first Duty Station. SA cadets get Tricare Prime, but the Tricare website conspicuously makes no mention of ROTC graduates.

This is something I'd strongly suggest asking his cadre and/or calling Humana Military (for Tricare East) directly and asking.

A LOT changed last year, and a lot of plans were discontinued. I wouldn't count on any info older than ~Jan 2018.

Thanks! I'll have him ask his cadre, but we might just call Humana to be on the safe side.

Our DS commissioned AFROTC. If I recall correctly they will give them the paperwork about 6-9 weeks prior to commissioning.

I would really read the fine print. Tricare can be problematic bc not every doc or pharmacy will accept it. IE we have Tricare, CVS use to accept it for prescriptions, but no longer does.

Just to let you know especially if you have other children, getting rid of one child from the policy may not save you any money if you have another child on the policy. That happened to us. If we take off my son (Air Force AD) from the policy, it wont reduce our policy a penny because our younger child is on the policy

Interesting. I looked at TriCare though for keeping adult kids and it's beabout $215 a month to keep him on the policy (,y wife's retired AF, not AD).

maybe i wasnt clear. I am with Kaiser. One kid or two kids, its the same price.

Correct — my DS will be covered by my civilian healthcare once he graduates and commissions and even gets married this summer ... until he joins AD, with no change to my “family” premium.

However when I retire in a few years, and go with TRICARE for our healthcare, I will need to buy a plan for $215 / month to cover my then college graduate daughter (no plans for military) that will cover her until she gets her own health care or turns 26

As a further follow up, I heard from a parent who had a recently commissioned AFROTC LT in the same situation. They purchased TriCare's YA coverage, but when they went to make an appointment, Tricare told them that their son had coverage. So, it appears there is coverage for these AFROTC kids between commissioning and reporting, I just can't find specific wording somewhere or a uni versal agreement. My son visited a base and the TriCare reps had never heard of TRICARE 708, nor has his cadre.

Call Tricare East (Humana Military) and talk to them directly. They are pretty responsive.

I did per your suggestion above and they sent me to DEERS who didn’t have an answer.
