Army-Navy 2019 Game Coverage

My daughter (DD2) and I will listen to the game on the radio. We are a little short on TV.

You ask where in the continental United States could these people be living to not have access to TV so a brief story is in order. This summer I learned that when the adjacent state has a "problem" bear they capture it and release the animal at the end of my dirt road. You get the picture of where we must live. Yesterday I took the two golden retrievers for the hour-long walk through the woods. It's not uncommon to see the occasional bear, the frequent deer, or have a mother moose chase the dogs back to you so yesterday it started with a large pile of fresh bear scat. The diameter of the feces tells you how big the bear is. Ohh, that is a big bear. Then we came across the tracks in the snow and again, ooh that is a big bear. Finally, I'm deeper in the woods when the older, dark red golden comes sprinting back, passes me and the younger dog at a full gallop, never acknowledging the two of us but headed back to the house. The female is no dummy and followed on his heels at a sprint. So again, yesterday became the first time I've walked out of the woods at twilight looking over my shoulder for what might be behind me. Last evening my daughter sat by the fire alternately reading chemistry and learning to operate my father's Colt .45 1911 from WWII.

You have to appreciate that nothing was going to diminish my daughter's excitement for tomorrow's game, least of all my story about a little bear outside.

Who needs TV when you have your own reality television right outside your door?! Minus the big bear scat! Great story!

when is USNA semester over? will there be a lot of students at the game or have most gone home for the holidays?

A-N game is mandatory attendance, similar to home games. There is even a restrictee bus.

The semester ends for mids upon completion of LMO, last military obligation. They finish exams and check out of company area in leave status, on various days as the exam schedule winds down.

In 1998 I was driving to Groton for a training requirements conference and drove upon the Brigade’s busses headed to Veterans Stadium. I had watched the game since childhood on our fuzzy black and white TV. I reflected a bit on my career and thought about the young folks about to attend the game live in full color. I’m a big college football fan and wished I could have pulled off I-95 with them and watched the game.

I just checked the route we took that day and the map warns there is “heavy traffic” headed into Philly. Yep, I’m sure there is.

The mids who rode the buses have been up since oh-dark-thirty, probably slept on the bus, and will be on their feet today until long after game end. Upperclass often take a weekend and go by car themselves, sharing hotel rooms and blowing off steam.

I’m glad the weather is not too extreme today up there. That can be one miserably cold and damp place for a long day outside.

My DS went up yesterday with the Drum and Bugle Corp and played at some pre-game rally yesterday with more planned today. He is looking forward to marching at half time representing USNA in front of the largest crowd he has marched before. BEAT ARMY!!
He finished finals on Thursday and is taking a validation test for Differential Equations on Monday before heading home that evening. He is so looking forward to being away from Bancroft for a couple weeks!
GO NAVY! BEAT ARMY!:groupwave:

That town rocks when Army and Navy are there!

Be still my beating heart!! This is the tentative schedule for August 2020.....can anyone tell me what the policy is on the international games .....do the Mids get to go??? (USNA v. Notre Dame in Dublin, Ireland) 💕💕💕💕

"Mandatory Fun and Issued Friends" ;) What a wonderful tradition to be a part of, I encouraged DD to soak it all in. We even spotted her on TV in the march on!

There was a thread on this when the game was announced a year or so ago.

Similar to the last 2 Dublin games, in spring 2020, word will be put out on how to sign up for the movement order. I haven’t looked at the game date and how it meshes with summer training blocks and Reform of the Brigade. The timing could preclude some upperclass from attending. Mids have to pony up some dollars, and they are usually lodged at Trinity. As I recall, when Alumni buy tickets, they have an opportunity to contribute additional funds to help defray mid travel costs. Of course, cheerleaders, and I think D&B and some Glee Club are official travel, but I am having trouble recalling details from the two I’ve attended there - dense memories of two great event-filled trips. I suspect Class of 2024 will not have an opportunity to go. They will be wrapping up PS and starting ac year preps. They will have to wait for an Alumni opportunity. Ireland is blanketed with blue and gold clad travelers from both schools, and every Dublin bar does a roaring business. Pep rally on St. Stephen’s Green!

Speaking of busses....how many busses does it take to move the brigade? I recall reading 44 last year, anyone know? Here they are en route this year!

@justdoit19 I don’t know how many but that’s how it looked a few years ago except more sunshine and older busses. There were lots of them.

Nice bus pic!

Oddly, one of my favorite things over the years about going up and back same day to the game, between Philly and DC area, is the camaraderie between blue/gold and black/gold attired people at the rest stops such as “Maryland House,” along I-95. Standing in line for coffee or food, some good-natured trash talk, compliments about the other team post-game, smiles between strangers, reunions of shipmates and battle buddies. I have run into former COs, retired admirals, an Army guy I dated in the last century pre-DH; DH runs into classmates, a Plebe year detailer, aviators who remember him as their IP or squadron skipper or Pentagon cube mate.

My brother called me up and we had the following conversation:

Him: I just saw your son on tv.

Me: Really? Where I will rewind.

Him: When they flashed the crowd. I saw 50 of him.

me:

Hangup.
That’s funny. Hopefully they weren’t flashing signs of white supremacy.
