USAFA Class of 2024 Appointment Thread

Not gaurd but I have some answers as an enlisted applicant.

You can break your contract for many commissioning programs, including applying to the air force academy. Part of this process will be getting your commander to approve your application. If you arent on station for a full year from the February before the school year, you'll have to apply for a TOS waiver. The waiver authority is your commander if you're in the gaurd, so if he has your back then you're golden. Make your intentions clear to your unit as soon as possible, and kick ass at your job. Another benefit to this is not having to get a congressional nomination.

A lot of people say that you shouldn't enlist to join the air force academy, so be prepared to do your entire contract if you don't get in.

Hey! I think the Guard is a great way to go. I have been able to experience AF basic training and have made amazing friends. We even got paid to go on a TDY to Hawaii! I enlisted two years after not getting in straight after high school, and attending NWP. So I'm 22 right now. I enlisted in 2017 and spent 9 months going to BMT and then tech school. This is my third completed application. Everyone has been extremely supportive of me going to USAFA. If you end up enlisting and get in, you will fill out a form DD FM 368 which is a conditional release from the guard. I wouldn't be worried about them not letting you go. With the Guard you don't have to wait a year to apply, thats why I initially went Guard instead of active duty.

It looks really good on your unit if they have an Airmen go to USAFA, or any service academy. If you have any more questions message me! The Guards really been a great thing for me, and I suggest it to others as well. Plus boom - enlist then work on reapplying straight away.

Thanks, both of you for the valuable information. In the case that you join the guard directly out of high school, you wouldn't be able to go to college for that first year because of BMT and Tech school, right?

Pretty much. Depending on your state and the current manning levels, you might end up waiting a bit before BMT and as a Guard member, you usually return back to your home station before going to tech school (unlike enlisting active duty where you go from BMT directly to tech school). The AFSC (the job you do) will determine the length of the school and the length of the wait before getting in. The issue there is that with not always having a set schedule and knowing your dates, it will be hard to get any college in there.

Updated graph with blue dashed line for appointments reported since my last post (14 Feb). Seems like admissions is a bit earlier this year compared to 2022 and 2023. Also might just be noise. I'm still waiting for a major "wave" akin to those seen in the second week of March for C/O '22 and '23.

In the case of my kiddo, he will decline 2 as he chose another SA offer of appointment. Difficult choice, good problem to have. I think Zagg just accepted an offer to another SA (if my memory serves, USMA?)

My DS has a MOC nomination to all four SAs, although you can count out MMA because he never finished the application so really that's 3. It doesn't help him with his whole candidate score, and you don't get bonus points for impressing the MOC enough to give you all four as an option.
All it really means is that if he is the best choice from the three slates of 10 that puts him on (one slate of 10 for each SA for that MOC), he might get appointed. I think multiple noms is more helpful if you end up on the NWA because it lets you sit in more than one "line" waiting to see if you get in.

Or I'm totally wrong. Just when I think I understand the process, I seem to be wrong so now we just wait and try not to pull our hair out!!
