C/O 2026! A Farewell of Sorts...

The year: 1996, and I was in a brief prior to moving into the Delta corridor. The lance corporal with an intelligence MOS walked into the room with the CO at the head of the table and his battle staff seated on both sides of the table. He was there to give the weather report. The young Marine started with, "Good morning, gents." You could feel the atmosphere change and everybody's heart skip several beats, waiting on the CO to jump on him for the breach of protocol and customary way for junior Marines to address seniors. But he didn't. He waited a few moments through the awkward silence and then told the Marine to proceed.

Marines address seniors as sir or ma'am and not by their rank and certainly not "gents." Not only did we have gents in the room but we also had a couple of gals.

DH and I have some gentle fun with our USNA sponsor midshipmen who pick up certain things in terms of Navy terms and customary usage, but don’t understand yet how to properly use them. A frequent oops: “Very well” is never said by a junior to a senior; it is a standard response by a senior to a junior in response to a report or a confirmation. It’s all part of “welcome to the club.”

According to my recruiter, for the MOS I'm interested/qualify for, would be August 2022. It may be earlier than this, although I don't know yet.

I'm a bit worried about my weight... My Recruiters (3 different people) said my weight is fine, but when I look online, it's still over the max. weight. Any thoughts on this. They never taped me, they just said my weight was fine, and I shouldn't worry, that I should pass easily.
Well if you are concerned about your weight I'd work on it so you don't draw any unwanted attention. The DI's will be looking for reasons to show you some love. The tape is crap in The Corps, if you look good in uniform they won't bother you. If you look like a sloppy soup sandwich........ STAND BY!!!!!! They will make you look good in uniform or you will be shown the door. Some branches will loosely tolerate this The Corps does not.

Run, Pull-ups, Push-ups and Sit-ups. REPEAT ! You can start now or start in Boot camp, I'd suggest now.

Eat nothing made with any form of flour. Eat nothing with any added sugar. Eat nothing with potatoes. Drink a gallon of water per day. Run like Forest Gump. When you're not running, walk. Start limiting yourself to 30 minutes of internet today - it's my understanding the USMC doesn't let you have a cell phone in BMTS (or whatever the USMC term is). If you smoke, dip, vape, stop now.

The recruiters say don't worry for two reasons: first, they have quotas to fill, and whether you make it through basic training or not, you have filled a slot; and secondly, most people lose 15-20 lbs in basic. It's pretty easy to pack it all back on in MOS school, so be careful.

If it all works out, and you land at Quantico for any of your training, PM me, and I'll treat you to lunch at the consolidated club.

USN/USMC run a program together called the US Naval Community College. USAF is definitely leading the charge, USN/USMC just figured this out this year and is still running pilot programs.

Good to know, but dang! We had CCAF 42 years ago. I will definitely push the young Marines I work with to sign up.

Great clip but starting at 1:35 is good advice.

Damned good advice!

Didn't realize the USMC ever had a Technical Sergeant rank.

Now you made me rent the movie. Richard Kiel is the only actor I recognize other than Jack Webb. Kiel played an "ugly" Marine, but at 7'2" I guess he exceeded the maximum height standard to be a Marine in real life like most of the rest of the cast.

Don't worry Doc he will learn that quick once he gets to PI or San Diego. That will be addressed before he is even off the bus and knows what the yellow footprints look like. Right about the same time the pucker factor kicks in and he realizes what he heck did I get myself into. ;)
I was often mistaken for being a Marine by Marine Officers.

And when the USMC officers would correct me for not saluting or doing something else that was not proper in terms of normal USMC standards , telling them I was not a Marine, but a sailor seemed to get me a shrug and a pass.

I remember as an E3 debating with a USMC 03 captain I did not know (phu bai) why I had not saluted him and then asking him after I was told to salute why he did not salute me back——his hands being full was less a good excuse I thought

Just as I though saluting officers while in the phu bai area to be a bad idea.

But an 0231 mos if you get it sounds like a great choice. You can attempt to take the recon indoc :)

Good Luck

I took my ASVAB yesterday, and I got a 68. A GT score of 100, and according to my recruiter he told me tha I qualify for all the jobs I was interested in, including Logistics!
Hey, I hope your enlisted route goes amazing. I know you like The Citadel, but can't afford it. But if you go enlisted Marines have you heard of The Citadel MECEP program (Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program). They are guaranteed at least 50% off tuition. There's more info in the link that'll I'll PM you.

Hell yes!!! I just got final medical clearance, just waiting literally in MEPS right now to discuss my delayed entry program, and dates for Bootcamp

“according to my recruiter”

michael, make sure what you want and have been told you can get , is clearly spelled out in the final enlistment contract you sign.

Don’t assume , don’t take anyone’s verbal promise—-take your time check and recheck that it is in the contract and it’s what you want..

What an adventure. Good Luck.

And don’t watch Full Metal Jacket right before you go :)

Full Metal Jacket is the closest thing I’ve watched to the real deal. Very well done!

The job is complete. I’ve sworn in… HOORAH! Go USMC!! 4 Years Active Duty, my ship date is August 29, 2022
CONGRATULATIONS! Big step, Best of luck to you, now start working out. Get those runs, pull ups, push ups and sits ups done. It will make life a lot easier if you are prepared. If you are prepared you will be able to help those that are not. Keep in mind you will all pay when one of you is not towing the line. And most importantly don’t say hoorah ever again. The Marine battle cry is Ooh-rah.

OP, you have bravely mentioned your weight and concern about certain standards throughout your posts here over time. Please assure us you are actively working on that. Not trying to work on it. But

Most definitely not hoorah or hooah.

Echo this, I went a month of no added sugar and a gallon of water per day and it worked wonders for my overall health. Also limit your dairy intake as well as carbs such as pasta. It'll help with the weight and you'll feel more refreshed, awake, and focused.

I need some opinions/advice:

As I search for what I qualify for my MOS for USMC...

4 things stand out to me right now, and I would like some opinions on which one would be best for me; I sort of would like to stay away from the dangerous stuff, hence when I reapply to USNA, I don't want to risk getting injured.

My 4 are as follows:

- Logistics

- Embassy Security Guard

- Combat Engineering

- Aviation Technician

Any thoughts/insights would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Good Evening to those on this forum, and those who all have helped me throughout my journey,

Today, I had to a reserved time that I was invited in order to come and complete my Service Academy Nomination (Congressional) Interview. Furthermore, I had received this email nearly 3 weeks ago, and in some ways I had false hope such that, I believed by receiving an opportunity for an interview, I might have a slight chance at receiving a nomination; even though I have a sub-par academic record.

Anyway, I went for the interview, and literally 5 - 10 minutes later, his board dismissed me, and stated that due to my below-average academic record, my chances are utmost slim of being appointed for an appointment. Obviously I was aware of this, but I thanked his board, and went on my way.

Furthermore, although it was a bit disappointing, I took it also as motivation to still continue my path and my journey to become an officer in the Armed Forces.

I am aware, that I still have the Senator Nomination, in which I still haven't heard anything about, but I assume I will not receive that one, as Senator noms are more difficult than Congressional Noms.

I see it, and plan it as I am trying to enlist as an E-1, in the Marines with a contract on AD, and reapply again to a Service Academy. Hence, also even if I am not accepted that time around either, I plan to go and complete OCS.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.
Got denied my Senator Nomination as well...
