AROTC 3rd Board

My son received the 3 year award to his three choices today. One is out of state, one is in state and the other is in the town we live in. We are so happy that he will have 3 great options. That being said, they are all different costs to attend of course. Do the schools themselves sometimes offer extra incentives to choose their school, such as money toward the first year or toward room at board? If so, what is the proper way for him to inquire about that, or do they present those offers on their own? Realizing we don't have a lot of time for him to make his decision.
All of my DS schools did. Sometimes it was admissions, sometimes it was ROO or PMS sometimes it was Fin Aid. Ask them all.

Congratulations to everyone who recieved a scholarship! It’s an incredible achievement and I know you’ll all really enjoy ROTC. If anyone has any questions about the Steel Battalion, specifically Lehigh or Lafayette, feel free to DM me :)

Hello! I'm a bit new to this forum but figured that I'd post a few questions here. My question is similar to jrnolen's. :)
I received a 3 year AROTC scholarship and plan on requesting a transfer to a different school. Would my chances of transferring increase if I put in the request as soon as possible?

Good to know! Go Aggies!
For TAMU the person I spoke to said "We are working with the university to provide additional assistance to future cadets just like you however we won’t have a definitive answer until mid to late summer. Our goal is to be able to bridge the gap but nothing as of today."

If I may ask, what was the question? Evidently the question that you were responding to has disappeared. My son is a sophomore 3AD at TAMU, so I have some experience if that's the question.

Hello, my name is Joel and I have just received my 3 year National scholarship. However, I was not admitted into my first choice (UW Seattle) but I was admitted into Virginia Tech as part of the corps of cadets. But I was not offered a scholarship for that school. I am quite worried about if my transfer requests would not go through. Any advice would help, thank you.

Someone had asked what they should do to ask for scholarships since they need help covering the gap year not paid by the scholarship. I just posted the response I got when I asked TAMU about it. Since you have experience, was your son given any extra scholarships to help out with the extra year? Do you have any tips or advice about it?

Follow the instructions for accepting the RTOC scholarship to one of the schools in your winner letter, even if you are not accepted. Upload the signed ‘intent and acknowledge“ letter , “request a change of schools” letter, & your acceptance letter to the school you plan to go to. You can do this all at the same time. Then wait to hear back from Cadet Command and hope for the best.

My son’s school allowed him to use his merit and financial aid awards for first year tuition and picked up room and board for all 4 years, even with the 3 year scholarship. Perks like this were a consideration when he was figuring out where to apply. We found all the info on the go army webpage, but since you have already narrowed down your schools you can just call them.

Joel, to add on, from my experience as a former ROTC PMS and current JROTC instructor, Cadet Command generally approves the majority of scholarship transfer requests (probably 10 of 10 requests during my combined tenure) if you follow the process described in this post, especially since you have not been admitted to one of your schools. Think of the schools designated on your portal/offer letter as the Army's attempt to shape the cohort and ensure most ROTC programs have a equitable and healthy amount of potential contracts to start the year. The only time they may not support a transfer is if a school is getting close to filling its contract mission with scholarship offers. I have two former JROTC Cadets at VA Tech now on ROTC scholarships, so if you do request to transfer there, ensure you understand that the Corps/SMC experience will be much more intensive than a traditional ROTC program. It also helps to contact the ROO at the school you want to transfer the scholarship to and they should help you with the process.

Thank you so much!

Yes, an idea and a reminder. First, if you have not done so already, apply widely for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship. http://www.hhloans.com/index.cfm?ObjectID=8FB593C7-EE1E-7872-00A8808886543AEE. That's $10k/year, and as a 3 AD winner, you should have decent shot to get one.
And the reminder is that beginning this year, scholarship cadets at TAMU have their room and board covered. So for years 2-4, that will not be an expense. Keep that in mind.

Congratulations to all that made the "cut" on the final board of the cycle. Take every advantage of it that you can, and treat is as the extraordinary opportunity it is!

For those that didn't get the nod, this year.....be a programmer as a freshman...work your tail off...and compete for a 3 year!

I don't live in Texas so I was not eligible for that scholarship unfortunatly. Thank you for the info!

Anxiously waiting with my daughter
MS II cadet here, I waited through all 3 boards and never received a scholarship from the boards. Not even a week after the third board the program I intended on joining called me to offer me a 3 year scholarship. Almost exactly two years later and here we are, contracted and having a nice scholarship. If you want it, work and you will get it!

Nonetheless good luck to her and to all!
